A hot air balloon crashed into a sugar cane field and at least 18 tourists were killed. It happened near the famed ancient city of Luxor, 320 miles south of Cairo.
The passengers were French, British, and other foreign nationals. One official who asked to remain anonymous, said the balloon caught fire, then there was an explosion as it plummeted to the ground. A total of 20 people were onboard.
This became the worst accident involving a hot air balloon in the country’s history.
Egypt’s tourism business has been suffering since the uprising which removed Hosni Mubarak from power. This will undoubtedly add to the problem.
There was no information whether or not American tourists were onboard.
