Update: Eighth-grader commits suicide in Davison Middle School bathroom

Davison Middle School

This morning officials said an eighth-grader of Davison Middle School shot and kiledl himself in the school bathroom. The 13-year-old shot himself in the head using a 40-caliber handgun

Some students say he was the victim of bullying. Another student found the student’s dead body in the bathroom of the school. The student’s name has not been released at this time.

The school was placed on lockdown at about 8:30 a.m. Although school Supt. William Grusecki was unavailable for comment, his office said the lockdown was due to a “situation with a student.”

A press conference was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to address the situation.

Detroit Free Press reports:
” A 13-year-old boy used a handgun to commit suicide in an upstairs bathroom Thursday at Davidson Middle School in Southgate – stunned the community and left students, police and school officials looking for answers.

The student — whose name was not released by school officials or police at a news conference held today — was found by another student after he allegedly shot himself with a .40-caliber handgun at about 8 a.m., according to an official with the school district. “ continued: http://www.freep.com/article/20130321/NEWS02/130321038/

Another eighth-grader inside the school said he was in class when he heard a shot. He said it sounded like glass breaking and a teacher rushed to a bathroom. Students were visibly shaken as they were led out of the school. Parents were called to come and pick them up.

Among the warning signs of suicide are: talking about suicide, expressions of hopelessness, personality changes, depression or giving away possessions.

Some parents, who also heard from students that the incident was an apparent suicide, wondered how the student would have been able to bring a gun into the building.

A teacher at nearby Asher School said staff there were told there was a “medical emergency” at Davidson. That the school was not on an official lockdown, but doors were secured once police and emergency medical vehicles rushed to Davidson.

Many students at Asher, an alternative high school, took to the Internet and learned the incident appeared to be a suicide.

Bill Grusecki confirmed a non-school-sanctioned candlelight vigil is planned for the Davidson Middle School student who fatally shot himself in the school bathroom

“He was a good person,” said Waad Thabet, a 13-year-old classmate. “He was friends with everybody; no one hated him. Everyone liked him.”

“We know who it is,” Grusecki said, but we’re not going to identify him “out of respect for the family.”

Although students will not return to the school until Monday, staff will report to the school Friday for grief counseling and to implement plans for the return of students on Monday, Grusecki said.

The school expects to take some extra security measures when students return and officials are considering permanent changes like installing metal detectors.

“We’ll check kids out when they come in on Monday,” said Grusecki. “It’d be best if they did not bring backpacks.”
