Angela Bassett, Patti LuPone Join Coven American Horror Story Season 3

Angela Bassett and Patti LuPone are joining the cast of FX fan favorite American Horror Story’s season three entitled Coven which is about; witches. Bassett just finished the panned Olympus has Fallen.

Oscar nominee and Golden globe winner Bassett and Tony Award nominee LuPone will also be joined by another Oscar nominee, Gabourey Sidibe, who got her Oscar nomination for her debut 2009 film, Precious.

Details are again being kept under wraps on who just everyone would be playing.

Ryan Murphy continues to lure a top-name cast to FX anthology American Horror Story and he’s obviously excited about his two most recent stars on the show. Early this morning he tweeted on twitter, “Two legends are joining the cast of American Horror Story: Coven — Oscar nominee Angela Bassett and Tony winner Patti LuPone!”

Singer-actress LuPone won Tony Awards for her role as Eva Peron in 1979’s Evita and as Mama Rose in 2008’s Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Her TV credits include episodes of Army Wives, 30 Rock and Frasier; the latter of which earned her a nomination for Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Emmy.

Angela Bassett has been fielding multiple broadcast pilot offers this past season. Her small-screen credits include ER, Alias and her Emmy nominated title role in The Rosa Parks Story; her feature film résumé is lined with Green Lantern, Olympus Has Fallen and 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It. She earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role and won a Golden Globe for her work as Tina Turner in the latter.

The two talented actresses join recently announced Gabourey Sidibe and Kathy Bates as well as returning cast members; Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy and Lily Rabein Coven, which will premiere in October.

Not a lot is known about season three of the witch-themed American Horror Story: Coven. Producers said at PaleyFest in March that the series would again search for haunted places in America. Murphy previously told The Hollywood Reporter that next year, season three, would feature three characters playing real people, including Bates.

“It’s a really cool story that we’ve been talking for a couple years, and this seemed to be the year to do it,” he said, noting the series will shoot in multiple locations, one of which is New Orleans which will be the first time the series has exited its soundstage filming location.

American Horror Story is a horror genre television franchise created and produced by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. It is described as an anthology series, with each season being conceived as a self-contained miniseries, following a disparate set of characters and settings.

The first season, which premiered on October 5, 2011 as American Horror Story: Murder House took place in the present day and followed the story of a family that moves into a home haunted by its former occupants.

The second season, which premiered on October 17, 2012 was titled American Horror Story: Asylum, it took place in 1964 and followed the stories of the inhabitants of an institution for the criminally insane.

American Horror Story has been well received by television critics and the public. There was some dismay when it was realised that each season would not continue the story line of the previous one. But overall the cast have been praised for their performances, in particular Jessica Lange who received an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for her performance.

Fans of the show have gotten over their “season story changes” dismay and as a result the series draws consistently high ratings for the FX network, with its first season being the biggest new cable series of 2011.
