Behind the Candelabra just as good as Fast and Furious 6

The Fast and Furious 6 had a record breaking weekend at the cinema. Michael Douglas didn’t seem fazed because his HBO original movie attracted 2.4 million viewers this Sunday during the first viewing, and 1.1 million more during the second broadcast. This means that they have only been beaten by Something The Lord Made, which was nine years ago.

They received 2.6 million viewers during the first viewing, which meant to Douglas and HBO that they were just as good as Fast & Furious 6.Behind the Candelabra is a movie about the unraveling of the relationship between Liberace and his lover Scott Thorson.

Liberace is played by Michael Douglas, and Scott Thorson by Matt Damon.These names alone might not have guaranteed success therefore they hired Academy Award winner Steven Soderberg to direct this five-year long love story relationship. Soderberg won an Oscar for the movie “Traffic,” but he also directed Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich,” and of course the less critically acclaimed, but very entertaining Ocean’s eleven.Why is it a must see:

– First of all who doesn’t want to see über macho, Gordon Gecko comes to mind followed by some legs of Sharon Stone in Basic instinct, Michael Douglas playing a gay man. And not just any gay man but Liberace. A man who tried his whole life to convince people that he wasn’t gay meanwhile living a flamboyant lifestyle full of excess. (This flamboyance wasn’t only reserved for the stage.) Douglas doesn’t think it’s so strange that he plays Liberace in behind the Candelabra. He said a while back: “I think I’m a chameleon. I think it’s something that I possibly inherited early on as a child going back and forth between two families.

I know that whether it’s right or wrong, I have an ability to sort of fit into a lot of different situations and make people feel relatively comfortable in a wide range without giving up all my moral values. I think that same chameleon like quality can transfer into films. I think if you can remember the reason you got involved with it in the first place and try to keep that impulsive, instinctive feeling even when you’re being beaten down or exhausted or waylaid, you’ll be successful.” Clearly, Douglas believes Behind the Candelabra is just as good as Fast and Furious 6.

Another reason to see it is, of course to see Matt Damon interacting with Douglas playing Liberace. The man who Douglas portrays, was very flamboyant and wanted to keep his sexuality under wraps. On the other hand, his lover Scott turned out to be a bit more over the top than people had assumed. At first he wanted to please Liberace as much as possible so he had plastic surgery in order to look more alike.

However a more dramatic turn of events, was that in 1989 Thorson turned out to be a pivotal witness for the prosecution. The courst was after Eddie Nash, a gangster, who was involved in the 1981 quadruple murders of the Wonderland Gang. Scott became part of the witness protection program after his testimony. However in 1990 he was shot five times,
because drug dealers had broken into his hotel room.

Reasons not to see it:
– Douglas was at the time of filming older than Liberace had been when he died. (Imagine that for a moment). All so Matt Damon who is 42, plays teenager Scott. The real Scott was only in this twenties when Liberace passed away.
-Behind the Candelabra is not Fast and Furious 6 of course. Their success was just as good as FF6 but the story has no exploding cars in it.

-We missed out on Robin Williams playing Liberace.
In short it’s a movie you don’t want to miss. Behind the Candelabra might not have exploding cars like Fast and Furious 6, but it does have; drama, comedy, twist and turns and above all we can all use some flamboyance in our lives. It’s just as good as seeing it on TV.
