Former NBA all-star Daron ‘Mookie’ Blaylock is in critical condition and on life support following an accident late Friday night in Jonseboro, Georgia. One other woman is reportedly dead following the incident late Friday night.
The 46 year old former guard was driving his Cadillac Escalade northbound down an Atlanta highway when he crossed the center line, striking a van in a head on highway collision. The reasons for his crossing into the other side of the road are unknown as of now. The women in the passenger seat of the van is the individual who was killed as a result of the wreck.
‘Mookie’ Blaylock and the two victims in the van, later identified as Monica and Frankie Murphy were airlifted to the Atlanta Medical Center, where Monica was later pronounced dead, she was 40 years old.
Upon arriving to the hospital via airlift, former NBA star ‘Mookie’ Blaylock was unresponsive and on life support after suffering severe injuries from the car accident. His condition has since improved and life support has been removed, however his condition is still critical at the moment.
There is still no official word on what caused Blaylock to stray into oncoming traffic, however a family member has reported that he has been undergoing treatment for seizures.
Investigations into the cause of the accident were being conducted late Friday evening by a Georgia State Patrol reconstruction team, although their findings have not been released.
Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the incident, however ‘Mookie’ did have outstanding warrants for DUI and drug charges in Spaiding County, Georgia.
‘Mookie’ Blaylock played 13 NBA seasons during his career, mostly with the Atlanta Hawks. He was named a member of the NBA All-Star team in 1994 while playing in Atlanta. His career numbers were pretty impressive, boasting career averages of 13.5 points, 6.7 assists, and over two steals a game.
He is the father of two children who currently are playing college football for the University of Kentucky, Zack and Daron.
Update- Daron ‘Mookie’ Blaylock now has been charged with two charges as a result of the incident. The former Atlanta Hawk has been charged with driving with a suspended license and failure to stay in his lane. The women in the passenger seat of the vehicle he struck died, and her husband suffered a broken ankle.
Frank Allen, chief of police in Jonesboro, Georgia gave a statement in which he explains that investigators would like a chance to talk with ‘Mookie’ before determining if he should face more serious charges in the incident. They are hoping that they will be able to talk with him today,the injuries he sustained have prevented any such discussion thus far.
His condition has been updated to stable from critical, making it appear as if he will be alright enough to talk to in the very near future. Discussions with Blaylock will attempt to figure out what caused the accident to occur. His answers could very well determine whether or not more serious charges will be brought upon him.
