Authorities-investigate-shootingOn Sunday, August 4, 1996 at about 4:11 a.m., Joseph Anguiano was shot in the front yard of his residence in the 8800 block of Hermosa Avenue, City of Rancho Cucamonga. Anguiano was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment but succumbed to his injuries. Detectives investigated the homicide in 1996 and developed numerous leads. The homicide investigation remained unsolved.

The Sheriff’s Cold Case Team re-opened the investigation in 2010 and re-examined the evidence. Based on DNA evidence, Gabriel Bencomo was identified as a suspect. Bencomo was arrested in Riverside on June 20, 2013 at about 3:15 p.m.. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for Murder with a bail amount of $1,000,000.00.

The Sheriff’s Cold Case Team consists of: two detectives, a deputy district attorney, and a criminalist. The Cold Case Team is funded in part through a $500,000.00 “Solving Cold Cases with DNA” grant from the US Department of Justice.
