Lavender for PMS – Male and Female

Women and men alike seem to go through a type of PMS – have you noticed?  A regular cycle of emotional highs and lows? True, women have the actual physical manifestation of what brings on this monthly occurrence, but men and women alike can both benefit from the use of lavender essential oil as a balancer and soother of body and mind. Yes, lavender is great for both male and female PMS symptoms.

Lavender is calming and harmonizing to the nervous system and can help reduce stress and relax tired muscles, relieving headaches and inducing tranquility of mind.  The essential oil of lavender is probably one of the safest and most versatile oils around and has been found to alleviate burns, heal wounds and stop itching.  Possessing such power and gentleness it is no wonder it has been used by men and women alike for bringing about a balanced state of mind, void of mood swings and emotional drama.

PMS symptoms can include, for women, swollen breasts, bloating, headaches and migraines, cramping, insomnia, increased fatigue, mood swings, heightened emotions, indigestion, nausea and constipation – to name just a few.  For men, a similar monthly type of emotional ‘swing’ can occur as the masculine gender seems to be aligning with a more balanced inner state.  Men might go through waves of anger or sadness, fears may arise and bodily sensations can change from the ‘norm’ to what feels rather foreign and often unpleasant.  Men might also feel indigestion, headaches and muscle pains and some experience these feelings as a sort of empathetic reaction to their lady friend’s cycle times.  How sweet.

Whether you are man or woman, ‘PMS’ can be eased through the simple use of lavender essential oil.  Either rub the oil on ‘neat’ – or straight on the ‘affected’ area – or diffuse the oil into the room for inhalation.  Lavender makes a great addition to a soothing bath or massage treatment and can be added to body oils, shampoos and other skin care products for heightened benefits.  If you choose a food-grade source for lavender oil, you can even enjoy it as a steamed-milk treat, just heat and whip your favorite milk (mine is almond milk), add a small drop of lavender oil and a spoonful of honey and presto!  A relaxing beverage you can enjoy anytime.

Eye  pillows and sachets are other great ways to enjoy the benefits of lavender.  Either using the essential oil to scent a bag of dry rice or other grain for use as an eye or neck pillow, or using the fresh lavender buds along with grain, will release the potent aromatic fragrance every time you move it – to soothe the soul and relax the body and mind.

Even though lavender oil is relaxing, it has been used successfully to treat depression and lift the spirits as well.  “Research has confirmed that lavender produces slight calming, soothing, and sedative effects when its scent is inhaled.”  No matter who you are or what symptoms you suffer from on a regular basis, lavender oil is worth a try for relieving what ‘ails ya.’  Male or female, lavender has been used to soothe and correct symptoms of PMS and other ‘monthly’ dis-harmonies that can plague anyone.  Take a moment to sink into the harmonizing fragrance of lavender and find yourself in the realm of peace – at last!
