Joss Whedon, the man who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer has gone online to say that the Batman and Ben Affleck Combo is a winner. The Marvel Avengers director has gone against the current trend of Affleck bashing by Batman fans to show his approval of the casting decision.
When the 41 year-old Argo director and star was named as the successor to the cape and the mask of the caped crusader, Twitter was overrun with people critical of the actor’s choice. With no less than four hashtags devoted to complaining about Affleck portraying the comic book crime fighter.
But Joss Whedon was quick to show his support on Twitter by tweeting: “Affleck’ll crush it. He’s got the chops, he’s got the chin. — just needs the material.”
The 49 year-old director also tweeted: “Affleck and (Henry) Cavill toe to toe — I’m in.”
It is not really surprising, Whedon has always supported the underdog as well as supported and promoted strong female characters. He was very verbal with his criticism of the Twilight saga and it’s wishy-washy “heroine” played by Kristen Stewart. Joss has gone on record stating that most female protagonists in films, especially Twilight’s Bella Swan are too passive.
Joss said, “The Twilight thing and a lot of these franchise attempts coming out, everything rests on what this girl will do, but she’s completely passive, or not really knowing what the hell is going on.”
Whedon says that there are a lot films borrowing from his Buffy-verse that have not understood the formula. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a strong female character influencing other characters of both genders and having the capacity to make decisions on her own. A character who can stand alone and not need a male figure to guide her.
Joss says that a lot of the supernatural thrillers have borrowed heavily from his work, but lost the strong positive female role model. He said, “And that’s incredibly frustrating to me because a lot of what’s taking on the oeuvre of Buffy, is actually a reaction against it. Everything is there – except for the Buffy. A lot of things aimed at the younger kids is just Choosing Boyfriends: The Movie.”
But the Buffy creator isn’t entirely alone in his opinion that the Batman Ben Affleck combo is a winner.
Zack Snyder, who brought us the Man of Steel and who will be working with Ben Affleck in the sequel which will feature Affleck as Batman for the first time has said that he thinks the actor is perfect for the role.
On Thursday, Snyder released a statement that showed his obvious support. In the statement Snyder said, “Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retains the charms that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”
Warner Bros made the announcement about Affleck as the new Batman on the same day that Snyder released his statement in support of their choice. Apparently the studio was not prepared for the huge Twitter reaction that their announcement generated. The comic book community immediately took to the microblogging site and the hashtag #BetterBatmanThanBenAffleck leapt to the top of the trends on Friday.
Joss Whedon has never been afraid of making his feelings known. His tweet supporting the Batman/Affleck combo and his assertion that Ben has the acting chops to make his portrayal of the crime fighter a winner is no surprise. And if it is good enough for the Buffy creator, it is good enough for us.
