Uh-oh there appears to be problems in the land of senior citizen action heroes. Bruce Willis is ditching Expendables 3 and Sylvester Stallone is so annoyed by Willis’ defection that he’s taken to Twitter.
According to Stallone, Willis is out and Harrison Ford has been drafted to take his place. Sly tweeted on Tuesday: “WILLIS OUT… HARRISON FORD IN !!!! GREAT NEWS !!!!! Been waiting years for this!!!!”
Then literally moments later Stallone tweeted: “GREEDY AND LAZY …… A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE”
But if the tweet was meant to denigrate Willis, Stallone needs to look at the Red 2 star’s recent output of films. Over the last two years the 58 year-old actor has been in nine films. He’s working on a further three films that will be released in 2014 as well as being listed in Die Hardest that will be out in 2015.
Lazy? We don’t think so. I sounds more like Willis expected a bigger paycheck for this third outing in Stallone’s aged action hero franchise. Considering that Willis’ part keeps expanding in the Expendables verse, it seems fair enough.
But there must be some reason that Bruce Willis has ditched The Expendables 3 and why Stallone is so annoyed that he’s taken to Twitter to vent his spleen. With a 2014 opening date, production is obviously in full swing, so what happened?
Expendables 3 is due to premiere on August 15, 2014 and Stallone will be back as mercenary leader Barney Ross, who leads his small band of mercenary men on breathtaking action filled adventures. New members to the Expendable verse are Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage, Milla Jovovich, and now, Harrison Ford. One returnee who sat out Expendables 2 is Mickey Rourke, as sideline character Tool the tattooist.
The Expendables 2, starred Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Willis, and Schwarzenegger opened in the U.S. on Aug. 16, 2012, crushing the competition at the bos office with an opening take of $28.6 million. The Lionsgate and Millennium Films project has earned $300.4 million worldwide.
Harrison Ford is a current hot property with his appearances in the thriller Paranoia and the controversial sci-fi film Ender’s Game. Ford’s press representative has confirmed that he’s been cast in the film.
There’s been silence from Lionsgate studios about the “last minute” replacement of Willis. The film franchise has been a huge earner for Stallone and the studios taking in an estimated $300 million worldwide.
The fact that Willis is also partners with three of the film’s cast – the 67 year-old Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Jackie Chan – in the Planet Hollywood chain doesn’t seem to have helped out on celluloid side of things.
It could well be that Stallone himself has gotten greedy and doesn’t want to fork out any more money in Willis’s direction or he’s had to pay more for the new cast members than he wanted and he’s feeling the pinch. It really is anyone’s guess as to why Willis is out and Ford is in.
Considering that all the cast are of the Geritol generation, with the exception of Jovovich, it could just be that Bruce Willis has ditched The Expendables 3 because he’s tired after being in so many films. Stallone, at his advanced age, may just be a little “crotchety” about the defection, hence his annoyed jab at Bruce via Twitter. But like Mickey Rourke, Willis may be back for a future Expendables romp after his rest.
