Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson cast for leads in Fifty Shades of Grey

At last.  The wait is finally over.  Universal has announced who they want to head the bill in their sizzling adaptation from the E.L. James naughty novel, Fifty Shades of Grey – Charlie Hunnam of Son’s of Anarchy and Dakota Johnson of Ben and Kate.

British-born Charlie Hunnam, 32, is to play Christian Grey, the billionaire BDSM-keen boss, who takes more than a shine to the young literature graduate, Anastasia Steele, who will be played by 23-year old Dakota Johnson.

The news of both castings came within moments of each other and the two actors are set to become massive stars, due to the popularity of the novel, by former television executive, E.L. James.

The film is to be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and produced by Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca, who created the highly acclaimed The Social Network.  The screenplay Fifty Shades of Grey was written by Kelly Marcel.

Hunnam is from Newcastle in the UK and a few of his film credits include Pacific Rim, Cold Mountain and Children of Men.  He holds a degree in performing arts from Cumbria College of Art and Design.  He is better known for his character “Jax” Teller on Sons of Anarchy.

Eonline reports that Hunnan is also a screenwriter and currently has a Dracula film, Vlad, on Brad Pitt’s slate for an upcoming production, with another in the pipeline.  He reportedly is keen on fitness and works hard to keep his physique in tip-top condition, which would certainly hold him in good stead (energetically, that is), for the character of Christian Grey.  Hunnan, in an interview with GQ UK, said:

“I’m happier, more confident, and more positive when I work out.  And I feel like I’m a better actor because of the clarity it gives me.”

Well, we certainly don’t doubt that, Charlie.  We’re sure you’ll be able to display your talents to the best of your ability… in a positive way, of course.  Oh, and in case any of you ladies were wondering, he’s taken.  Hunnan has been happily involved in a steady relationship for the past six years.  Sorry!

It would also be interesting to be a fly on the wall at Dakota Johnson’s parents house, for they are none other but Working Girl star, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, famed for the 1980s hit television show, Miami Vice.  Ms Johnson is nearing her 24th birthday.  She has practically grown up on movie sets, so would be able to handle the onslaught of public attention adequately, since being cast with Hunnan in Fifty Shades of Grey.

Ms Johnson has also made appearances in 21 Jump Street and her maiden voyage into the film world began when she appeared with her mother, Melanie Griffith in Crazy in Alabama.  Her role in The Social Network is what probably clinched her deal with the producers, who must have seen something in her that would probably capture that essence of vulnerability found in Anastasia Steele, the character she is to play in the upcoming production of Fifty Shades of Grey.

Fifty Shade of Grey is to be released by Focus Features on 1 August 2014 in the US and is sure to be a multi-million dollar smash.  Why?  Because the sales figures for the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy of books was the fastest selling in history.

Very intuitive, Lisa! I also didn’t see Dakota as Ana, rather, I could see a brunette… maybe not Victoria Beckham, though! There’s always that tricky situation of how to avoid disappointing adaptations… Thanks for all your comments!

I think Dakota might have suited Ana’s flatmate Kate’s role…but then again maybe NOT even her either??? Dame I still can’t get over so disappointed who they have playing Ana’s role. “Awesome choice on Charlie Hunnam!” He was also my number one choice when I first saw him in ‘Sons of Anarchy’ When my son got me watching Sons of Anarchy last year, I had just started reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ I couldn’t put the book down and couldn’t watch enough of Jax in SOA. I had mentioned it to my daughter and couple other relatives last year that if they ever make a firm of FSOG ‘Jax would be the perfect Christian Grey’..and what do u know..LOL!

I totally agree with lauren, NOT DAKOTA for the part of Ana! Victoria Beckham would have been a better choice..”but yeah I know she’s not in it for an acting role..what a shame!”

God Dakota is HORRIBLE for Ana! She looks nothing like the character what-so-ever. I am shocked! I hope Team 50 will revisit and revise!
