Earthquake Off Pakistan Creates New Island

Earthquake off Pakistan Creates new Island
Off the coast of southwestern Pakistan, in the Arabian sea, something remarkable has occurred with the latest earthquake, which took place Tuesday afternoon at 4:29pm local time.  A small island was raised up out of the ocean approximately 30-40 feet high off the coast of Pakistan when the earthquake hit measuring a 7.7 in magnitude.  Death tolls are expected to rise.

Apparently, a change in the geography of the earth with an earthquake is not too uncommon.  Chile had its entire coastline rearranged and given the placement of this country as per the international date line, its morphing shape shortened the days by just a “fraction of a second.”

The Pakistani earthquake occurred in a fairly remote area of the country called Balochistan, with the epicenter near Arawan. As per the latest reports, 150 were counted as claimed by the natural disaster, though it is expected that many more will be found as the estimates come in. Houses have crumbled due to inexpensive construction, trapping many inside their earthen walls.  BBC News made the following report after the earthquake hit:

Many of the casualties were from Labach, on the northern outskirts of Awaran town. There are reports of some people trapped under the rubble of collapsed houses.

Abdul Qadoos, deputy speaker of the Balochistan assembly, told Reuters news agency that at least 30% of houses in Awaran district had collapsed.

The quake was felt as far away as New Delhi, India, approximately 500 miles to the east.

According to reports, 90% of the villages in Arawan were demolished by the 8 second quake.

The nearby city of Khuzdar will be use as a relief base and as many as 1000 soldiers will be deployed in rescue efforts as early as the morning.

As far as the new island off the coast of Pakistan, many gathered to see the site.  People reported the island to be somewhere around 100 feet long from what they could see.  The closest town to the newest island is known as Jhanda and the island is reported to be around a half of a mile out to sea.

Aftershocks from the earthquake measured at around 5.9 and the area is now under red alert.

Six districts of the area are affected by the quake besides Arawan including: Khuzdar, Kech, Panjgur, Gwadar and Chaghi.

While it is certain the new island created by the recent earthquake off Pakistan is stirring quite an interest, rescue efforts and safety precautions for those who have endured the quake are definitely higher on the list of priorities today.  It is of great concern to see individuals freed from collapsed structures and the areas which shouldered the most damage, rebuilt stronger.  Measures are being taken to make sure people have clean food and water and a comfortable place to stay while the rescue mission continues.
