According to BBC News, Tokyo has won its proposed bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, fending off a number of other contenders, including Madrid and Istanbul.
Madrid was originally eliminated, during the first round of voting, whilst Tokyo picked up a number of its votes during the second round.
Upon the International Olympic Committee’s announcement being made, by President Jacques Rogge, there were scenes of celebration witnessed across the country.
Japan has not had the opportunity to host the Olympic games since 1964, and today’s announcement will likely signal a future economic boon for the country.
This news also means that Tokyo will be the very first Asian country to host the Olympic Games on two occasions.
