Once again, our duly elected representatives in Congress of both parties have done the responsible thing; they kicked the can down the road. Last night instead of coming up with any real solutions to all the latest “crises” they managed to kick the can down the road so we can go through all this again in four months.
Last night, the Republican controlled House of Representatives passed the bill sent to them from the Senate to end the government shutdown and avert whatever would really or theoretically happen if we didn’t raise the debt ceiling. Nothing was solved, nothing was changed, next year we will have another crisis where we can go back to name calling and finger pointing and then – kick the can down the road again.
This is an epic failure, not of the Republicans, not of the Democrats, not of the tea party movement but of the government as a whole. Contrary to what critics of our republic want you to believe, our system does work, it has for 230 years, but not when it is corrupted by people who care only about keeping their jobs above what is best for the country. As long as the people we continue to elect and reelect to represent us put special interests in front of those of the country then nothing will change and we will travel from one manufactured crisis to another until we find ourselves with no freedom, no money, no representative government and no hope.
It should now be evident to all but those who refuse to take their heads out of the sand that sending people, like Harry Reid (D – NV) and John Boehner (R – OH) and our current president to represent us time and time again when they can’t even act like adults is not working. There were some who tried to act responsibly, coming up with alternative plans, trying to work out compromise, but our leaders refused to make any concessions or even sit down and talk.
Whether you agree or disagree with people like Ted Cruz (R TX) or Mike Lee (R – UT), at least they had the guts to stand up for what they believe in. No that isn’t true, most of the others also stood up for what they believe in as well, keeping their jobs even if it means flushing what little principles they have left down the toilet. Career politicians are what they are and it is what they will always be. Keep your job no matter what; damn the torpedoes and the will of the people, full speed ahead.
But then, can we really blame the politicians? Maybe instead, we should be blaming ourselves because we continue to reelect these people to represent us. It is obvious that the majority, and that is an awful small majority when you look at how many people actually turn out for elections, want these people to represent them. They don’t take the time to educate themselves on the issues, they can’t stop thinking of themselves and about how much they can get the government to give them and do for them that they continue to vote themselves raises. Vote for the guy who will give you the most stuff, that is the answer. And as long as this continues we will continue on our path to a place where none of us really want to be.
As Walt Kelly’s character Pogo famously said, “We have met the enemy, and he is us.” No truer words have ever been said.
