As we all know, the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts will be playing one another on Sunday with the game marking the return of Peyton Manning to the city where his legacy was first built, however Von Miller will steal the show in his first game back from suspension in 2013. Yes, even with Colts owner Jim Irsay’s remarks leading up to the game regarding his former quarterback having drawn all the headlines throughout the week.
Considered to be a top unit heading into the season, the Denver Broncos defense has struggled at times this year. Perhaps due largely to the offensive success Denver has had, the defense has given up more points than most could have imagined. They have held just one foe, the Jacksonville Jaguars, under 20 points this year.
Giving up a league worst 337.7 passing yards per game, something needs to be added to the mix to boost the performance of the passing defense. Enter Von Miller, who is making his first appearance of the season after serving a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
A year ago, Von Miller tallied 18.5 sacks and was a force to be reckoned with for opposing offenses. Looking at him, he could be even more dominant this year. One glance and it’s easy to see that Von Miller has essentially been living in the weight room while serving out his punishment. 255 lbs in 2012, he now checks in at 270 lbs, enough to seriously push around some lineman.
“I do have a sack celebration up my sleeve,” Miller said about facing quarterback Andrew Luck in his return. “Hopefully I can get one.”
Peyton Manning and Jim Irsay have stolen all the headlines leading up to the Broncos and Colts contest, and quarterback play will go a long way to deciding this one. Luck and Manning trading blows will be exciting to watch, but it will be the impact of Von Miller that could put the Broncos over the top and lead them to victory Sunday.
