American Idol Auditions #3 January 22 (Review & Videos)

American Idol Auditions #3

Tonight marks the third night of auditions of American Idol. At the beginning of the episode, we heard contestants talking about The Chamber, the place where people wait before they’re called in to face the judges and sing.

The first auditions of the night took place in Detroit. Ryan Seacrest introduced the judges, and said that those are the people who the contestants auditioning need to impress.

Keri Lynn Roche, 24,  from Coney Island, NY, was first up. She sang “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons and played the guitar as she sang — she was pretty darn impressive, in my honest opinion.

Keith asks if she could sing a song without the guitar — she said yes, and sang “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Etta James. The judges all liked how she did, and Keri got three “yeses.”

Next on American Idol, we saw a dude, Julian Miller, singing and playing the guitar, He said he was influenced by Motown. He sang really well, and also got three “yeses.”

We got to see Olivia Diamond, Paris Primeau, and Samantha Furtwengler, 18. Paris sang “House of the Rising Son.” Olivia, 22, sang “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Samantha chose to sing “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jason Mraz. All of them, except Samantha, got “yeses.”

Then, American Idol went to its first commercial break of the night.

Malaya  Watson, 15, was up next on American Idol after the break. She said that she was in Marching Band. The song she chose to sing was “Ain’t No Way” by Aretha Franklin . She sang it acapella, and sounded great, Keith said “I loved it!” J-Lo said “I did too!” and said he liked it, also.  She got three “yeses.”

Bryan Watts performed “So Small” by Carrie Underwood.  He has a really, really cool voice — he has a chance to go all the way, IMHO! Keith looked mesmerized. Harry Connick, Jr., said “Jennifer can’t speak.” He, also, got a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.

Khristian D’Avis sang next on American Idol. She said that she had her own band. She sang “Saving All My Love for You” by Whitney Houston.

Keith and J-Lo were not sure about if she was good enough to send on, saying she sounded “shaky.” J-Lo said: “You seem complicated.” The judges noticed that her accent disappeared.

J-Lo and Harry Connick Jr. gave her “yeses,” while Keith Urban said “no.” Two “yeses” were enough to send her on to Hollywood. Keith was kind of “pissed off” because he felt that the young lady didn’t pay attention to the constructive criticism they were trying to give to her.

Back from another commercial break, American Idol had Jena Asciutto, a senior in high school, sang “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. I thought she sounded pretty good, but Harry saw that she did something with her tongue, and closed off some of her sound.

Keith really loved how she sang, and said “you did your own thing.” The judges each gave her “yeses” and said “she’s one to watch.”

Boo Boo Brown was a bit…different.  There were a couple of other…singers who followed, none of whom moved on to Hollywood.

Then, Melanie Porras, 19, sang “Fever” and played the guitar — she was AMAZING, IMHO.  J-Lo thought it was  a”safe” choice so she sang “Wanted Dead or Alive” acapella. J-Lo said that “I could hear you do records.” She got three “yes” votes, and will be moving on to Hollywood!

Back after break, still in Detroit, American Idol had Harry Connick, Jr. giving an “audition” to Keith Urban. Harry said “I’d like to sing ‘The Star Spangled Banner.” He screws it up, of course, and tells J-Lo: “My God, you’re so beautiful!”

Liam Newberry, 18, was the first actual contestant up next. He sang “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra, Jr. He said he was influenced by Harry Connick, Jr. The guy could sing, and sounded a lot, to me, like Frank Sinatra, Jr. J-Lo thought it was too “flat.” Keith said it wasn’t “sexy” enough. Harry said “go home and find out how you would sing it to someone who you think is really sexy. He got three “no” votes. That was surprising to me, as he sounded like he had a pretty decent voice.

Jade Lathan, 20, sang the Amy Winehouse song,You Know I’m No Good. She snapped her fingers before she began, to keep time, I guess. Harry said he liked her, and the other two judges agreed — she’s going to go on to Hollywood!

Sarah Scherb, 19, sang next on American Idol. She had a really nice voice, and the judges gave Sarah three “yeses.”

Sydney Arterbridge, 19, sang “Loving You.” She did a primo version, even hitting the high run at the end. She received three “yes” votes from the judges.

Maurice Townsend, 26, a father of four from Grand Rapids, Michigan, sang “So High” by John Legend. Keith Urban was really impressed, as was J-Lo and Harry, who called it “a really good performance.” This guy also might go all the way, IMHO. Maurice is going to Hollywood!

Day 2 in Detroit, Jennifer Lopez was late. Everyone was waiting her to show up so they could continue the auditions.  David   was up next, singing”Too Close.” He was fantastic, and played the guitar really well, too. Keith and J-Lo looked like they were really getting into the song.  He got three big “Yes” votes.

The twin sisters Karlita and Rakita Gulledge, 19, performed “Listen” by Beyonce Knowles. Unfortunately, they didn’t sound much like Beyonce. Harry and J-Lo said there was a lot of “screaming” rather than singing. The judges all voted “no.”

Ryan Seacrest then did the new feature asking the home audience if they think a singer went home or was sent by the judges on to Hollywood. In this case, I think that the person got a Golden Ticket. I’ll find out after break if I was right or wrong (I was wrong).

After break, Brandy Neelly, 18, sang — she had auditioned before. She performed “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes. I thought she sounded pretty good, though maybe a little bit breathy. Keith clapped after she sang, and said “I loved it” and J-Lo also said she loved it,though she sounded a little “nasally.” Harry said he “enjoyed” it, and said that he wouldn’t correct her voice, though J-Lo said that she would. Still, the three judges gave her “yeses.”

The next singer, Ethan Harris, 20, looked like he could be one of the Osmond Brothers. He had a picture with him he drew of Keith Urban, and asked Keith to sign it, which Keith did.

Then, Ethan sang “You’ll Think of Me” by Keith Urban. He had a pretty cool voice, about the same way he spoke.J-Lo really liked it, and Keith said he dug it. “Yeah, you dug it!” J-Lo agreed.

Next, we saw three contestants perform back-to-back. Leah Guerrero, 21, was first up. She sang “Stay” by Rihanna.

Ayla Stackhouse, 17, was next. Harry asked if the music of Motown had influenced her, and she said “definitely.” She sang “Wings” by Little Mix acapella, And id a terrific job. J-Lo said “you have a whole package thing going on.” Harry thought her eyes “sparkled.”

Eric Gordon, 26, of Richmond, Kansas, performed. He had a cool pompadour and sang the John Mayer song, “Perfectly Lonely.” He showed he could really hit the high notes. Harry said” I dug you, I really did.” He got three “yes” votes.

More commercials ensued….

When American Idol came back from break, Xavier Calvillo, 25, sang “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” He wanted to sing another song, when the judges gave him “no” votes, but they told him to keep his dignity.

Tony D tried to sing “Radioactive” but didn’t do very well, and got “no” votes. We saw other people who also got “no” votes.

Then, Ryan Nisbett, 24, from  sang “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. He said he used to weigh over 300 pounds but he then went on a dairy-free diet and now looks pretty thin. He sang “On the Arms of an Angel” and he sang like an angel. He easily hit all of the high notes in the song, showcasing his tremendous vocal range. J-Lo called him “one-of-a-kind.” Harry said he had “an incredibly unique voice.”

Ryan received three “Yes” votes, and a Golden Ticket to Hollywood. He thanked the judges, only afterwards saying he had a cold, but Keith said he hadn’t made any excuses before he sang, that “he wasn’t a bitch about it.”

Marialle Sellars, 17, was the last performer of American Idol. She told a touching story about how her dad taught her how to sing and play the guitar, then he passed away one Christmas night.

She sang “Grenade.” AWESOME is perhaps the best word to describe how well she sang the song — she easily got the judges to give her “yes” votes and each one gave her a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.

Ryan Seacrest said 42 people were given tickets, and over one hundred had been given them so far — and there are more auditions to come, tomorrow evening! Please stay tuned with me tomorrow to check out the next episode of American Idol, and let me know in the comments area below what you thought of tonight’s episode!

She got three, and I believe Ryan Seacrest said something like it was the first time ever that someone got three Golden Tickets. They only count as one, when it comes down to getting to go to Hollywood, but it does show you that all three judges were pretty impressed by her voice.
