Fans of what is likely the most popular franchise in cinematic history are probably salivating over Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew’s sharing of a variety of shots from the Star Wars set. The shots, released on the actor’s Twitter feed, have given fans a glimpse behind the scenes of the incredibly successful film that kicked off sequels, prequels, cartoon series, and a collectors fan base like no other.
Among the shots are Carrie Fisher in the chain mail bikini from Return of the Jedi, Fisher and Harrison Ford in an embrace in one of the icy hallways of Hoth, and Mark Hamill mugging for the camera in a floral print shirt. Some of those involved behind the scenes, making the magic happen, also feature prominently in the images. There is also an image of Fisher and an 11-year-old Warwick Davis, who played Wicket the Ewok, among other notable Star Wars characters. Davis has, of course, gone on to star in such films as Willow and the Harry Potter franchise as the esteemed Professor Flitwick.
While no one seems to know exactly why Mayhew, the man behind Chewbacca, chose to share the shots from the Star Wars set, they have fans raving about them. Mayhew has said on Twitter that he was feeling “#nostalgic” so he was going to post some images. No one could have anticipated the extent to which Chewbacca’s photo posting was going to go.
Mayhew’s posting frenzy was ongoing from Wednesday until the early hours of Friday, and this resulted in some 90 shots hitting Mayhew’s Twitter feed. The images certainly offer an insight as to the camaraderie that definitely existed on set during filming of the three films, and while the original film had run quite a ways over budget, it’s clear from the shots that the actors and crew had a good sense of humor about the challenges they may have faced during filming. One of the shots even features Sir Alec Guiness as Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi having his birthday celebrated on set during the filming of the original movie in the saga.
The pictures come as speculation continues to swirl about the hotly anticipated Star Wars VII, to be directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams has been on a hot streak of late, having directed the highly rated reboot for Star Trek and its sequel. The latest buzz about the next Star Wars movie set to bow in December 2015 is that Breaking Bad‘s Jesse Plemons is currently auditioning for the movie, which could be hot news for fans of the hit show.
While speculation continues to swirl about the upcoming sequel to the Star Wars saga that began in 1977, fans will have to content themselves with these funny and heartwarming images from the Star Wars series set. There have been up to 90 images that Mayhew has posted in all, and the man who played the growling, massive Chewbacca has definitely gotten tongues wagging as a result of the posts.
Fans will also have to keep hoping that Chewbacca – actor Peter Mayhew – decides to share more shots from the ‘Star Wars’ set in the future.
