Science has come a long way when it comes to discovering amazing health benefits from just about anything, especially fish oil. This incorporates essential fatty acids (EFA) omega 3, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which can be consumed by eating fish or taking fish oil supplements. It is a natural way to provide the body with beneficial support for a variety of important body functions.

Fish oil is derived from the fatty layers of many types of fish including mackerel, tuna, salmon, anchovy, sardines, herring, and many more. It has been shown in studies that fish oil helps with depression, psychosis, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, and Alzheimer’s.  DHA has been proven in studies pregnant women who were supplemented with fish oil later has shown major differences from the women who do not. The women who did take fish oil supplements passed it down to the children while pregnant, which boosted their brain development and have improved hand-eye coördination.

Just recently the touching recovery story of Grant Virgin, seventeen, was reported. Grant was in a car accident. He had broken bones and injured his internal organs. Grant was also in a coma. He resided in the Children’s Hospital in Las Angeles. While in a comatose state, doctors had mentioned fish oil and its brain recovering properties as it could stop inflammation in the brain. After he had received these doses, he later woke up from his coma, and began to speak in small phrases. Although he struggles with speech, his body is almost completely recovered.

In 2012 there was another incident where fish oil has had major influences in the medical field. Bobby Ghassemi, also seventeen, was in a car accident as well. He was in a coma before he was airlifted to the hospital. His brain was engorged and required the pressure to be relieved by taking out a portion of his skull. The bleeding was an issue and it was suffused to every part of his brain. The doctors told Bobby’s parents that he would be in a vegetable state for the rest of his life. Soon after, Bobby’s father spoke to an army colonel and doctor in which at that point he had mentioned fish oil. Large amounts of the fish oil with mimic what is in the brain and help encourage the healing process. It does this by triggering the good protein in order to cope with the brain damage while it decreases inflammation. After they had been giving Bobby twenty grams a day (which the average is 2 grams per day), Bobby had come out of his coma.

In fish oil, EFA is not produced by the fish, but by the organisms from the microalgae that the fish eat. Scientists genetically engineered plant seeds from the camelina sativa with the microalgae gene. The oil is then given to the fish in their feed to mimic their eating habits.

Whether you want the genetically modified or all natural fish oil, the health benefits are amazing. According to the American Health Association, it is crucial to intake at least five hundred milligrams of the combining EPA and DHA. Many people do not get that into their diet and this is usually because many do not eat the recommended two to three fish servings per week, which is why supplements may be so popular. Doctors suggest one thousand to twelve hundred milligrams of fish oil is essential to the health everyone. Doctors also say that the intake depends on the percentage of body fat that one has. Either way, always consult with a dietitian.
