
Celebrated award-winning Mexican author Jose Emilio Pacheco died on Sunday after a fall. Pacheco suffered a fatal heart attack after injuring his head and died at a hospital in Mexico City. Born in 1939, Pacheco was a well-loved poet, essayist and novelist who is best known for his 1981 novel Las Batallas en el Desierto. The author won the Iberoamerican Poetry Prize and the coveted Cervantes Prize in 2009 and is also remembered for translating the works of TS Eliot and Samuel Beckett into Spanish. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted his condolences at the passing of one of Mexico’s great literary figures.
