Julia Roberts Mourns After Half-Sister’s Death

Julia RobertsJulia Roberts is in a state of mourning after hearing about her half-sister’s death. Nancy Motes was found in the home of someone else, and her death is believed to be from a drug overdose. This cannot be confirmed until an autopsy is carried out, later today.

Motes had a history of mental health problems and was taking prescription drugs. She was found with those drugs near her, in a bathroom on Sunday. According to officials, she was pronounced dead at her home. The New York Daily News reports that she was pet-sitting at the time.

The 37-year-old reportedly had a rocky relationship with her half-sister actress. During the weeks leading to her death, she was using Twitter as an outlet for all the things she blamed Roberts for. In August 2013, she told the media about the difficult time she had growing up. Motes was overweight and constantly taunted for that by the Pretty Woman actress. The taunting eventually led to her opting for gastric bypass surgery and shedding around 145 pounds to get to her current 155 pound frame.

The half-sister of the actress also stated that she hoped the two could build on their relationship, but acknowledged that just “getting skinny” was not going to be enough.

It may not have helped that Motes was bullied at high school when her half-sister landed the role of a prostitute in Pretty Woman. Motes was in the eighth grade at the time.

Roberts is now mourning after the death of her half-sister. She reportedly cancelled an Academy Award luncheon and interview with Jimmy Kimmel on Monday as she handled the news. During the luncheon, she was supposed to promote her upcoming movie that has been nominated for an Oscar, August: Osage County.

Motes and Roberts were close at one time. They share the same mom, Betty Lou, but Motes’ father is the actress’ step-father, Michael Motes. The age gap may have been one of the issues when they were both growing up, along with the fact that her two other, older half-siblings were stars.

Motes attempted to break into Hollywood and shared her dreams with her Ocean’s Eleven half-sister. However, Roberts was not supportive of the plan, mainly due to her fluctuating weight problems. The teen returned home, where she lived in the basement of her mother’s house. However, she eventually got into the Hollywood scene, but behind the camera. It was because of the A-list celebrity that she got behind the camera as a production assistant on Glee.

While living in Los Angeles, Motes suffered from severe depression and her weight increased to almost 300 pounds. She then moved to Miami after losing weight and got an apartment with john Dilbeck, her fiancé. They planned to marry in May of this year.

The 37-year-old was in Los Angeles County, pet-sitting, as she worked as a dog sitter. Officials state that she was in a bathtub of water with a mixture of non-prescription and prescription drugs. The autopsy is scheduled for today, when the role of those drugs can be determined. Until then, Roberts and the family can just mourn over the death of her half-sister.

Mental illness can cause people to fixate on perceived negative experiences and to demonize and scapegoat friends and family members. Ask yourself why someone’s family would “cut them off”? What is it about that person’s behavior that has become toxic to other family members? Anti depressants can also cause enormous weight gain. Any one who kills themself is clearly, seriously in need of help. This is not a normal reaction to the ups and downs of life. Her family probably tried everything legally possible to get her help.

You are stating that Julia Roberts did give her sister a terrible time about her weight or that her sister “said” Roberts gave her a hard time about her weight? How can you know that Roberts didn’t support Motes because of her weight? Twitter?

      Hi Lori,

That comes from the interview that Motes gave back in August with the New York Daily News.
