Netflix Sets Return Date for ‘Orange Is The New Black’

The women of Orange Is The New Black are coming back to Netflix. When Netflix first announced their plan to create original content for the streaming service back in 2011, few anticipated the kind of success that the company are seeing now. Following the premier of House Of Cards season two on Valentine’s Day, Netflix set the return date for their other big breakout original series, Orange Is The New Black. The prison comedy-drama will be available to stream in its entirety to subscribers on June 6th.  

Orange Is The New Black tells the tale of Piper Chapman, a women who is imprisoned for an fifteen month stint in a female federal penitentiary for a crime she committed ten years prior. Played by Taylor Schilling, Piper had been engaged to the man of her dreams in the upper-middle class of New York City before she got arrested for when she transported a suitcase full of drug money to her then international drug smuggler girlfriend. The series is based upon the memoir Orange Is The New Black: My Year In A Women’s Prison written by Piper Kerman.

Netflix first announced the series back in July of 2011. Orange Is The New Black was created by Jenji Kohan of Weeds fame. The series was ordered for a thirteen episode season to begin production in the fall of 2012. The cast of Orange Is The New Black was filled out quickly by many recognizable faces including American Pie franchise alumni Jason Biggs and Natasha Lyonne, Laura Prepon known for her part as Donna on That 70s Show, and Kate Mulgrew, most notable as Captain Kathryn Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager.  The series first season began filming in Rockland County, New York on March 7th, 2013.

When the first season premiered on July 11th, 2013, the series generated more viewers and hours viewed in its first week than other popular original series, House Of Cards as well as the Netflix produced forth season of Arrested Development. Orange Is The New Black’s return date set by Netflix is sure to cause an even bigger response for audiences now that the word is out on the show’s quality  The series has been praised for its sharp mix of dark comedy and dramatic weight with well-rounded characters and unique flashback format. The series has been nominated for several Writer Guild of America Awards, as well as a Golden Globe for Taylor Schilling’s performance in the lead role. Orange Is The New Black also won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Streaming Series.

The new season is apart of Netflix continuation to increase the amount of original content available on the streaming service. Earlier this year, the company announced a partnership with Marvel Studios to bring four Marvel superheroes to the small screen. The deal is for five seasons with a single season dedicated to characters Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage before culminating in a team-up mini-series titled The Defenders. Netflix most recently announced a deal with Disney to bring the sixth and final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars to the service. The return date set for Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black is certain to be appointment binge viewing for millions of people when the second season premiers on Friday, June 6th.
