Chelsea FC furthered their lead in the English Premier League with a 3-1 win over West London rivals Fulham. The Blues were guided in the victory by a hat trick from their German winger Andre Schurrle. He was aided by two superb passes from in-form Eden Hazard and another very well placed pass from Fernando Torres. Not all the credit can be given to the great passing though as all three of Shurrle’s goals were brilliantly finished.
The win today by Chelsea FC helped them gain points in the English Premier League title race as their London rivals Arsenal, who were in second place going into today, dropped three points in a loss to Stoke. Today’s loss by Arsenal just continues their real poor run of form over the last couple of weeks. Arsenal have only managed to win two of their last six Premier League games, as well as losing with only 10 men midweek to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Another team who was able to take advantage of Arsenal’s loss today was Liverpool as they beat Southampton to propel them into second place in the title race. The fourth place team in Manchester City is still waiting in the wings 6 points back of Chelsea with two games in hand; they will take on Sunderland in the Premier League tomorrow.
Although in first place goal scoring has been a bit of an issue this season for Chelsea FC. They lack a true quality center forward with Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o all past their primes. Most likely this will be an issue looked at heavily over the summer by Manager Jose Mourinho. He has two options when it comes to acquiring a new center forward; he can either go into the transfer market this summer to try and land a big name like Falcao or Diego Costa or he can wait for the Belgian international Romelu Lukaku to come back from his loan spell at Everton.
Lukaku has been in excellent form for Everton this season and it seemed as though Mourinho was hesitant to let him leave on loan even this past summer so him returning into the Chelsea side is a major possibility. It is also not out of the realm of possibility for Mourinho to go get a top striker from around Europe and retain Lukaku, bolstering their attack even more.
Whatever decision Chelsea and manager Jose Mourinho make about their striker situation in the summer is irrelevant for the rest of this current season. That is why Mourinho had had to get very creative this season with how he designs his lineups and where on the field he plays certain players. Recently over the past two weeks Mourinho has abandoned his favored 4-2-3-1 formation and gone with a 4-2-2-2 with one of his creative midfielders like Hazard Shurrle or Willian playing as a secondary striker with either Torres or Eto’o.
Regardless of any flaws in the Chelsea FC lineup they are still sitting atop the Premier League table and sitting in good position to advance in the Champions League. So with a little help from Arsenal Chelsea continue to gain ground in the title race with a 3-1 win over Fulham today.
