The Game of Thrones books are about to get another prequel, written by the series author George R.R. Martin. It will be a short story that covers earlier periods of the war in Westeros than any of his books has so far.
The book series has since become an exciting TV series, starring Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey. The exact timing of the show has not been confirmed, with options either set in the Middle Ages or far in the future where all technology has been forgotten about.
Inspiration for the novels came from the very real Wars of the Roses, which took place in from 1456 to 1485. The whole series is about a battle for the throne of Westeros, a made up country that the TV show’s credits portray as the United Kingdom, with other countries mentioned as part of Europe. However, the exact location has never been confirmed. The United Kingdom makes sense for the inspiration.
This new prequel to the series will be a prequel to the initial one that was released in December last year. The Princess and the Queen was a novella that became the final part to a collection of short stories in a book entitled Dangerous Women. It is the story of King Viserys I Targaryen’s eldest daughter, who is named heir to the throne but is overlooked after his death. Instead, her brother Aegon II is crowned king, and it starts the war that is known as the “Dance of the Dragons.”
Now Game of Thrones will get another prequel, and this time it will tell the story that comes before all of that. Called The Rogue Prince, or, the King’s Brother, the story will go into the life of Viserys’ brother, Prince Daemon.
Like The Princess and the Queen, this story will be part of a collection with other writers. It will be the last in the Rogue collection, which will include short stories from Scott Lynch, Connie Willis and many more. It is currently available for pre-order, but will officially be released on June 17, 2014.
This is two months after the fourth season of Game of Thrones will start in the United States. The fourth season is eagerly anticipated, and is expected to show the “Purple Wedding” where the people see the end to the mad King Joffrey’s terrifying reign. The upcoming season is also expected to see Daenerys Targaryen struggle to control her three dragons as they get older and she strives for more power to take back her throne.
Martin has had fun with his previous Game of Thrones prequels. He has had the opportunity to bring in characters that had only previously been mentioned, and create new political factions around them. It is likely that he will be doing something similar with his upcoming short story. To create the upcoming story, he has put Winds of Winter on hold. This will push back his fourth Dunk and Egg novella, which was put on hold for Winds of Winter.
The question many Game of Thrones fans want the answer to is if HBO will use this or another prequel that Martin writes for the TV show.
