News is just in that US secretary of state John Kerry will not fly back to the US today, instead arranging to meet with Russian secretary Sergei Lavrov in order to discuss Ukraine. The pair will meet in Paris on Sunday, where the meeting will take place.
President Putin is reported to have phoned President Obama and the Russian foreign ministry says that it is Washington who initiated the contact between Kerry and Lavrov. On Friday the Whitehouse gave a reading of the call, in which Putin discussed diplomatic resolution of the crisis in Ukraine. The meeting between Kerry and Lavrov is hoped to further democratic negotiations.
