Meryl Streep to Play a Rock Star

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep has signed onto one of the hottest properties in Hollywood. Meryl Streep will star as a veteran rock star in the Jonathan Demme directed, Diablo Cody scripted Ricky And The Flash. The film will be produced by Marc Platt and is currently being shopped around.

In the upcoming Ricky And The Flash, Meryl Streep stars a stubborn woman who left her family long ago to pursue her dreams of being a rock star. Many years later, she has a change of heart and feels the urge to be a mother again to her long-since estranged children while one of the now-adult children struggles through an impending divorce.

Jonathan Demme is best known for directing 1991’s Academy Award-winning The Silence Of The Lambs. Along with the popular entry in the Hannibal Lecter franchise, Demme directed Tom Hanks to an Academy award in 1994 with the AIDS drama, Philadelphia. Demme has not made a feature-length film since 2008 when he directed Anne Hathaway to an Oscar nominated performance in Rachel Getting Married. The director has remained busy, however, overseeing multiple documentaries including Neil Young Journeys and Kenny Chesney: Unstaged. Jonathan Demme previously worked with Meryl Streep in the 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate.

Diablo Cody exploded into Hollywood with her debut screenplay, Juno. The surprise indie hit cost a mere $7.5 million to produce and grossed over $231 million worldwide. Cody’s other original screenplays, Jennifer’s Body and Young Adult, failed to match the same kind of box office success. Cody also created the television series The United States Of Tara for Showtime which ran for three seasons. In 2013, Diablo Cody released her directorial debut Paradise to poor critical reception.

While Meryl Streep playing a rock star may seem difficult to imagine to some, this is not the highly acclaimed actress’ first time in front of a microphone. Streep also had a starring role in the feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical, Mamma Mia! based upon the hits of ABBA. The eighteen-time AcademyAward nominated actress was most recently seen in August: Osage County. Streep is one of the most celebrated actresses in cinema’s long history. She has won three Academy Awards since first being nominated for The Deer Hunter back in 1979. Some of Streep’s most notable films include playing the boss from hell in The Devil Wears Prada, the award-winning drama Kramer Vs. Kramer and the adult-centered comedy It’s Complicated with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin.

Ricky And The Flash is being handled by Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married producer Marc Platt as well as Diablo Cody’s manager Mason Novick. Novick has produced all of Cody’s films as well as Marc Webb’s debut feature film, (500) Days Of Summer and this past year’s The Incredible Burt Wonderstone starring Jim Carrey and Steve Carell.

No production start date has been set for Meryl Streep to play the fading rock star in Ricky And The Flash as the film is currently being shopped around to many studios and financing companies. Both Fox 2000 and Universal are rumored to be the top bidders for the film. Given the talent presently attached to the project, Ricky And The Flash stands a good chance at becoming a possible contender during the Oscar season when it is released.
