The third and final trailer for Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been released. This follows dozens and dozens of clips, stills and interviews that pretty much spoils the entire film. Nevertheless, the visuals look breathtaking and it will certainly be an exhilarating experience.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 pits the webslinger against his greatest battle yet, while digging deeper into the mystery of Oscorp and his father’s strange death. Director Mark Webb returns for the sequel, the second of a planned quadrilogy, and he will continue his duties into the third film before bowing out.
Fans have been concerned with this film in regards to the number of villains – Electro, Rhino and Green Goblin – similar to Sam Raimi’s highly disappointing Spider-Man 3. However, Webb reassures fans that much care was put into the film and they made sure the stories of the antagonists intertwined. The director also revealed that Rhino, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, will only appear for four minutes.
As the final trailer hints at, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is more of a setup of bigger to things to come. Sony will be following in the footsteps of Marvel Studios by doing their own shared universe. However, instead of a team of heroes, fans will get to see the popular, antagonistic Sinister Six on the big screen in their own self-titled film releasing at an unknown date. The team will likely consist of one or more of the villains appearing in this summer’s sequel.
The script for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is written by Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Jeff Pinkner. They are also attached for the third installment and will be joined by Ed Solomon, screenwriter of Now You See Me and Drew Goddard, writer of The Cabin in the Woods, to plan out an expansion of the Spider-Man universe, including the aforementioned Sinister Six.
Another confirmed spin-off film is Venom, which is rumored to be the final film in the quadrilogy, instead of just a fourth entry centering around Spider-Man. The anti-hero is arguably the most popular character in the Spider-Man universe. His portrayal in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was, to put lightly, butchered and drew plenty of heat from fans, who are expecting big things from Sony to redeem themselves.
Returning for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is Emma Stone as Peter Parker’s sweetheart, Gwen Stacy. Rumors are abound that she will bite the dust similar to her arc in the comics. Photos of Stone wearing the same jacket Stacy wore during her death in the comics, hints even more of the tragic event to occur. Also in the final trailer she is shown falling through the sky, with Spider-Man apparently catching her. Could that be the scene? Whatever happens, Parker’s second love, Mary Jane Watson, is set to appear in the third film portrayed by Shailene Woodley, whose star is expected to rise from her leading role in Divergent, releasing this week. Rounding out the cast is Jamie Foxx as Electro and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn/The Green Goblin, along with Paul Giamatti, Sally Field, Colm Feore, Chris Cooper, Felicity Jones, B.J. Novak and Sarah Gadon.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens worldwide on May 2, 2014. The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is set for June 10, 2016, while the fourth and likely final Spider-Man installment is set for May 4, 2018.
