Chelsea FC

It was a classic Champions League match tonight in west London as Chelsea defeated PSG 2-0 to go through to the semifinals. After falling in the first leg 3-1 in Paris the Blues had to fight back with all their might and got a result that saw them go through on away goals. Demba Ba scored the crucial second goal that saw Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho run down the sideline to celebrate like he scored the goal himself.

Chelsea had history on their side and chants of “we’ve done it before” rang through Stamford Bridge, as this was very reminiscent to the situation they were in two years ago against Napoli. Just like in this tie in 2012 against the Italian outfit they had a second leg at home and were down 3-1. That thrilling contest ended 4-1 after a Branislav Ivanovic goal in extra time and was the win that gave the team the inspiration to go on and win the Champions League trophy. After todays win Chelsea will be looking to do the same and take home the trophy in this years competition.

The game today was an instant classic as Chelsea were forced to attack and PSG did not rest on their laurels and took the game to the home side. Early on the Blues looked a little nervous and it took about 25 minutes for them to settle into the match. Both teams had significant injuries with Zlatan Ibrahimovic being injured in the first leg and Eden Hazard going off after only 17 minutes through injury in this tie. Andre Schurrle replaced Hazard and scored the first goal in the 31st minute after a long throw in and a great flick on by David Luiz.

The second half saw Chelsea begin to dominate proceedings and attack PSG with all their might. Within the first 10 minutes of the half the Blues had two great chances that both slammed against the crossbar. Oscar had an amazing free kick and Schurrle had a great shot with a ton of pace with both only to be denied by the crossbar. Edison Cavani had two great chances on the counter attack that he sailed over the goal; both missed chances will have PSG fans wondering if they would be in the semifinals if it were not for the injury to Ibrahimovic.

Chelsea brought on the onslaught of an attack in the last 10 minutes and in the 88th minute they finally broke through to get the crucial goal. After a deflected shot Demba Ba was in perfect position to sweep the ball into the top of the net. PSG had one really good chance in stoppage time as Petr Cech denied a near post shot. The end of the game celebration by Chelsea and look of heartbreak on the faces of the PSG players showed just how much this competition means to the clubs.

Chelsea had to fight back in this second leg to get by PSG 2-0 and are now in the semifinals of the Champions League. The next two members of the semifinal will be decided tomorrow and will join Chelsea and Real Madrid who held on today to move past Borussia Dortmund. Whatever the matchups in the semis end up being this year’s competition is set up to end in spectacular fashion.
