Goonies Getting a Sequel

Rumors have swirled before that the popular cult movie Goonies is getting a sequel, but fans will be excited to know that these new rumors are actually true. Recent comments made by Richard Donner, the Goonies director, suggest that there may in fact be a new Goonies movie to look forward to.

Donner is also known, not only for Goonies, but for also directing the original Superman and X-Men movies. Paparazzi captured the Goonies director signing autographs in Beverly Hills for fans. A cameraman asked Donner if he was going to make another comic book movie.  Donner replied that if people consider Goonies to be a comic book, then yes, he was making another comic book movie. The cameraman then asked if any of the original cast would be in the new movie. Donner replied that he hoped all of them would be able to return.

The Goonies movie came out in 1986 and was an immediate cult classic. The story follows a group of friends who are trying to save their house from foreclosure. The adventure starts up in the attic on a rainy day, when the group finds a Spanish treasure map. They decide to follow the map and find the treasure so they can save their house. The map leads them on an adventure that involves pirates, gold, and criminals. Fans have long anticipated and hoped that Goonies would get a sequel, and no doubt they are going to be excited.

The Goonies movie was shot in Astoria, Oregon in a huge white house that sits on a hill and overlooks the water. There is still a sign in front of the house that says Goonies house. Loyal fans can still climb the hill and take pictures in front of the house. There is no word if the same house will be used again in the sequel.

The original Goonies gang included Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and John Matuszak. Donner commented that while it was fun working with so many child actors, they were a handful when they got together. Sean Astin, made comments last year while promoting his new movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles about returning for a possible sequel. Astin commented that he was so positive there would be a Goonies sequel that he would bet his children’s lives on it. Astin also won an award for Best Starring Performance By a Young actor in A Motion picture for his portrayal of Mikey.

Now that the Goonies movie is getting a sequel, fans can speculate about what the new storyline will be. Donner did not mention how the original cast would fit into the new story, would they appear in cameo roles, or would the story pick up with the gang after 28 years? Even though the original Goonies movie opened to mixed reviews, it placed among the top 10 movies in 1985. During opening weekend, the movie grossed over $9 million at the box office. With all the anticipation surrounding the new film, there can be no doubt the Goonies sequel will do just as well.
