Old Dominion University (ODU) Police have charged Michael Spearman with the alleged rape of an ODU student. Spearman was arrested and charged on Sunday with two counts of forcible sodomy and one count of rape according to Giovanna Genard, an ODU spokeswoman.
According to ODU police department the sexual assault reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning around 1:30. The alleged assault took place at The District; a privately owned apartment complex located on 38th street in Norfolk, Virginia. At the time the assault occurred the 30-year-old security guard was on duty at the private complex where the female victim lived.
Spearman does not work directly for The District or ODU; he is employed by United American Security. When contacted, United American Security declined to comment.
The District provides off campus living for students of Norfolk State, Norfolk’s Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University. At this apartment complex the management team strives to make the residents college experience the best there is.
The District maintains that it is the ultimate in student living. Some of the features of this college community are a theater room, hot tub, 24-hour fitness center, resort style pool, clubroom with pool table and so much more.
Nikeya Melton, an ODU junior who also lives in The District, said it is really and honestly very scary. The security guards are supposed to be there to protect them. She went on to say it has been quite suspicious around there with the security guards because they are often seen just watching them. Although it is crazy, Melton said she is not too shocked to know something like that might have happened.
Another student, Morgan McCollum an ODU senior, agreed that this situation is crazy. She said security guards always around and she actually feels safer when they are there; she remembers a time when they had no guards. Having heard about this now, McCollum said, is just crazy.
The District’s management issued a statement concerning the incident:
The District has been made aware of a situation. This matter has been reported to law enforcement who is investigating. It is our understanding that an arrest has already been made. We are fully cooperating and assisting law enforcement. Out of respect and to avoid any interference with the investigation, we are making no further comment at this time. — Will Rogers, Regional Supervisor
