Aaliyah’s Lifetime Movie Will Soon Be on TV

The Lifetime television cable network will soon release a  movie on the life story of Aaliyah, the singer and actress of the 90s who lost her life at just 22-years-old in a plane crash. The movie will be based on the best-selling book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman by Christopher Farley. Lifetime just confirmed that the beloved singer’s character will be played by 17-year-old Disney star Zendaya Coleman.

The Time Magazine music editor’s book, narrates the life of Aaliyah from the beginning of her search for success as an artist until the day of her tragic death. The Brooklyn-born star began reaching for a career as a singer at the age of 10 by competing in the show Star Search. At the age of 14, Aaliyah released her first album named Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number that sold over a million copies. She then became an acclaimed artist with her chart-topping second album and song One in a Million in 1996. Her single became a hit in the U.S., and reached the number one spot on the R&B charts for six weeks. The singer proceeded  to take on Hollywood in the year 2000 and performed in the action movie Romeo Must Die. In 2001 she starred in Queen of the Damned while her third album was being released. Farley interviewed Aaliyah shortly before the accident that claimed her life along with the life of her crew members and the pilot. Farley’s book, Aaliyah: More Than a Woman was released in 2002, a year after the singer’s death.

The Lifetime tribute movie will soon come to the TV screen for the benefit of  Aaliyah’s fans. The working title for the movie is Aaliyah: Princess of R&B. Zendaya Coleman, merely 17-years-old, has been cast in the role of the fallen singer. Zendaya recently gained recognition from her participation in the celebrity TV contest Dancing with the Stars, season 16. She is currently the star of the Disney show Shake It Up!, and just last year released her album Replay, which became certified platinum this January. Zendaya has a full plate this year. She is also set to star in the series K.C. Undercover and the movie Zapped, both by Disney Channel.

The soon to be televised Lifetime movie of the fallen artist will be produced by Aaliyah Productions Inc., with a script by Michael Elliot. The film will be shot this summer to air in the fall. Zendaya will record four of Aaliyah’s songs. Late last year, the triple-threat star paid homage to Aaliyah at the 20th annual Dream Halloween event in Santa Monica, California. Zendaya was dressed in a Tommy Hilfiger outfit just like Aaliyah wore at one of her appearances in the 90s. Zendaya expressed that she wanted to pay tribute to the star by recreating one of her classic looks. The singer will appear in the 106 & Park TV Show on Tuesday, in which she will talk about her lead role in the upcoming movie. She recently took to Twitter to express her enthusiasm and the honor she felt to portray one of her biggest inspirations.

Who cares they picked her for a reason, they saw something in her that y’all wouldn’t see.

I think keisha off of 106 and park should play Aaliyah because she look more like Aaliyah.

the reason why it’s a little not right for her to play that role I’m not saying that she’s a bad actress or a un cool person, because she’s really cool and very talented.but people out there that never even knew Aaliyah or don’t even know who she was will think that she was bi racial. even Jennifer Lopez played Selena and she had similar of the ethics background

at least they picked the right type of people for the cast that favor the real safe by the Bell

I think Keshia Chante should have played the role…

I think someone of more Aaliyah color should play the cast. And if the family dont want the movie played it should not be played.

As an Aaliyah fan, I am not questioning Zendaya’s racial background. I just don’t see her play such a sultry, mature role. She can act and sing but I am not sold for this role. I don’t think we are truly ready for a movie about our beloved Aaliyah. Plus since her family is not on board with it than I am going to stand with them.

I even made a video on my thoughts on the situation.
