Like mother, like daughter. It appears that Lindsay Lohan’s mom Dina is finding it hard to stay on the right side of the law. According to reports, Dina Lohan spent Tuesday in a Long Island courthouse to await sentencing stemming from a 2013 drunk driving conviction.

51-year-old Dina stood before judge Andrew Engel who after unleashing a tongue lashing on Lohan sentenced the mother of four to 100 hours of community service. Judge Engel also ordered that Dina Lohan’s drivers license be suspended for an entire year. Once her license is returned, the judge also ordered that Lohan’s vehicles get installed with an interlock device for another year. The monitor will gauge Lohan’s blood alcohol level before allowing her to drive. To add to the punishment, Lohan must also pay a $3000 fine and must participate in a drunk driving program.

Many believe that Dina Lohan, who will not be serving any time in jail, is getting a mere slap on the wrist. Nassau County is considered one of the harshest areas in the country when it comes to DWI sentencing that includes significant jail time and probation. Lohan was arrested in September of last year by Long Island Police after driving 77 miles an hour in a 55 mile per hour zone and failed a roadside alcohol breathalyzer test that registered twice the legal limit at 0.20. Dina Lohan’s attorney, Mark Jay Heller believes Judge Engel concluded that Lohan who has no history of alcohol or substance abuse was caught in an isolated incident that occurred while celebrating her 50th birthday.

While Dina will not be spending any time behind bars, many question just how much did being the daughter of a celebrity come into play.  Given that the Lohan family has a certain level of celebrity in Nassau county, it appears by some that Dina is getting preferential treatment the same way her daughter Lindsey has managed to skirt jail time for her indiscretions with constant stints in rehab.

Following the sentence, Dina Lohan who plead “guilty” after initially pleading “not guilty” to the incident says she is glad to have the situation now behind her and is looking forward to moving on. According to reports, Lohan changed her plea as a legal maneuver to a plea bargain.

Just like her mom, Lindsay Lohan has seen her time in a courthouse on a myriad of issues and just like her mother, she has been dragged into court on issues of alcohol. It was in 2013 that Lindsay Lohan skipped out of Cliffside Malibu rehab facility that was part of  her own plea deal resulting from a June 2012 traffic situation. Lindsay Lohan made headlines and ultimately pleaded no contest to reckless driving and lying to police. Lindsay Lohan has been making more of a name for herself in tabloids over her legal issues that has eclipsed what appeared to be a young career with so much promise. Recent attempts at a career comeback include her portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor in a bio-pic that was panned by critics and a reality show on the OWN network that did not capture an interested audience.

It goes without saying that the Lohan family has their problems just as much as any other family. The Lohan’s have what any other family does not and is a name marred in scandal but somehow allows them to stay above the law and out of jail cells.
