Jennifer Lopez Divorce From Marc Anthony Finalized in Court

Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are now officially divorced after having separated three years ago. They were granted a divorce by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John Sandoz on Monday, June 16. Besides dissolving their marital union, the judge also granted Lopez and Anthony joint custody of Emme and Max, their six-year-old twins, according to E! News and several other sources.

Marc Anthony, 45, proposed to Jennifer Lopez, 44, 10 years ago, and they got married at the Beverly Hills residence of Jennifer Lopez in June 2004. Marc Anthony filed to be granted a divorce on April 9, 2012, and he asked for joint custody of their children. The couple had been living apart from each other since 2011.

The marriage was the third one for Jennifer Lopez and the second one for Anthony. Her first marriage was to the famous chef, Ojani Noa, and only lasted a year. Her second one was to backup dancer Cris Judd, who Lopez was married to from 2001 to 2003. Anthony was previously married to Miss Universe Dayanara Torres, and that marriage was from 2000 to 2004.

Lopez filed a response in court in December 2013, also requesting for joint custody, and that the court legally would change her name from Jennifer Muniz (Marc Anthony’s real last name is Muniz) back to Jennifer Lopez. She and Anthony reportedly still remain on friendly terms with each other, and they have both participated in raising their twins.

Soon after they split up, in 2012, Jennifer Lopez began going out with Casper Smart, 27. Around the same time, Marc Anthony started up a short-lived, year-long romance with model Shannon De Lima.

J-Lo and Casper Smart were together for two-and-a-half years before their relationship ended. The American Idol judge reportedly asked for advice from Anthony before she broke up with Smart, according to a source who spoke to E! News. After Anthony and Shannon broke up, he had a romance with Chloe Green, the Topshop heiress. They broke up earlier in 2014.

Jennifer Lopez has stated that she has learned a lot from her past romances and she now Lopez says she feels “like I come from a place where I’m stronger and, I think, better.”

Many aspects of their divorce were finalized in March. However, the final judgement package was not rendered official until on Monday, because of a backlog in court cases. In an interview with Nightline in August 2011, Marc Anthony said of his divorce from Jennifer Lopez “It was a decision that we made jointly.”

When asked if she would ever get married again, Jennifer Lopez said she had “always believed in that institution” and she added that her parents had been married “for 35 years” and that “I believe in love. That’s the main thing.”

Now that a judge has finally made the divorce of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony final after they have been split up for three years, they both can perhaps feel that part of their lives is behind them, though they will continue to see each other in their roles of co-parenting their twins. According to the court papers and the decision of the judge, Marc Anthony will have custody of Emme and Max for seven days out of each month. Jennifer Lopez will have custody of their children for the rest of the month. Also, both Lopez and Anthony agreed with the judge that their children should be shielded from reporters and the paparazzi.
