Kendall and Kylie Jenner are mostly known as the little sisters of Kim Kardashian. However, the two girls have been following in their famous family’s footsteps, and have been busy making a name for themselves. The two girls are involved in the fashion world, have graced magazine covers, have their own makeup line, perfume line, and now a new novel. Yes, that’s right, Kendall and Kylie Jenner have a new novel out, but fans are wondering how much of the book did the sisters actually write?
The Jenner sisters have just released their new novel, Rebels: City of Indra. The book is described as a dystopian story about two sisters who go on a journey and are “amid the threat of constant danger.” This is surely an accomplishment for anyone to publish a book. Especially, given that Kendall Jenner is only 18 years old and Kylie Jenner is just 16.
Publisher of the Rebels book, Karen Hunter, talks about the expectations of writing a novel for celebrities. Hunter has also worked with Kris Jenner and Tamar Braxton. Hunter says that she does not expect any celebrity that she works with to actually sit down and write the book. Hunter also says that she does not know any teenagers that could write a book, period.
So how much of the book did Kendall and Kylie Jenner actually sit down and write? Probably zero. Celebrities usually use a ghostwriter; a seasoned journalist or novelist that actually can write something that people will want to read. Ghostwriters negotiate a fee, usually around $20,000 to $40,000 to write several hundred pages for the book. These pages will then be passed off as work the celebrity completed, and the celebrity gets the credit for it, not the writer.
Do fans even care that their favorite celebrity did not write the book? Valarie Frankel, a ghostwriter and novelist, says no. Frankel was a ghostwriter for Snooki Polozzi, from Jersey Shore. Frankel explains that as long as the reader or fan can visualize the settings or characters, they don’t mind if the celebrity wrote it or not.
Maya Sloan is the known ghostwriter for the Jenner sister’s Rebels book. Sloan’s name also appears on the book, with Kendall and Kylie Jenner, something that is rare. To prepare for the book, Sloan says she did an interview with the two sisters and studied them for many weeks to better understand their personalities. Sloan says that writing books is changing and people need to know its a collaborative process.
Since Kendall and Kylie Jenner also added Sloan’s name on the cover of the book with theirs, they must be okay with fans knowing they did not actually write the book themselves. It will be interesting to see if that changes the sales of the book. However, the Jenner sisters have already decided that they will put out more books in the future. And why not, since they didn’t have to do any of the writing anyway?
