What began as just a one-season show has quickly become a cult-classic for Nickelodeon. Remaining tight-lipped about the details, Nickelodeon’s epilogue to the critically acclaimed Avatar: The Last Airbender series’ Legend of Korra: Book Three gets a debut this June. Premiering June 27 at 7 p.m., fan boys and girls all over America can rejoice at the return at the return of the animated teenage heroine and her pals in Book 3: Change.
Legend of Korra was originally meant to be a continuation from its parent hit-show and an epilogue of the audience discovering the mythos behind the air element. As the season progressed, it is unique Japanese cartoon art style, intriguing characters, and action-packed animation quickly made it a hit on the network. Eventually, it was rumored that creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were not done telling Korra’s story. Fortunately for fans of the Nickelodeon series, the rumors were true and the show was announced to return with Legend of Korra Book 2: Spirits and Book Three: Change set to debut, consecutively.
With the first season, audiences around the world were introduced to the teenage heroine as she took on the role of Avatar. Korra was definitely different from the Avatar Aang. She was more aggressive, hotheaded, and stubborn. Mastering the four elements (Fire, Water, Air, and Earth) are the Avatars’ duties to maintain peace within the world between all benders of the elements. The Avatar is the only one that is capable of manipulating all four and only tasked with maintaining balance around the world. As the season opened, Korra had already mastered everything but air. Meeting with Tenzin, Avatar Aang’s son and master of the air element, she was supposed to continue her training with him. Unfortunately she was unable to because Tenzin had to overcome troubles in Republic City, thus postponing her training. Being the stubborn Avatar that Korra is portrayed, she followed Tenzin to Republic City anyway and came upon a series of events that led to the meeting of many new characters and a showdown with the season’s masked-villain Amon.
As season two began, Korra had finally unlocked her potential as an airbender and was set out on the task of understanding the spiritual side. Book Two: Spirits gave fans a glimpse into the past of each characters lives’, as well as the protagonist. Fans learned of the history between the Avatars and their abilities, the history of the different water tribes, and watched as Korra grew and matured. As the book progressed, a more sinister conspiracy theory began to unravel and Korra eventually rose to the challenge to overcome the book’s main villain. The book wrapped with the connection to the spirit world remaining open, so that humans and spirits could live together in harmony. Where Book Two: Spirits left off, Book Three: Change picks right back up.
The world is a different place for Avatar Korra and Book 3: Change goes into further detail about what has happened, while giving some light on the past. After much speculation and mystery surrounding the premise of Book 3, Nickelodeon has finally announced the debut with a trailer and clip to help build anticipation for the upcoming premiere. The show is set to start back this coming week and is sure to keep fans’ satisfied with a well-written and fantastical plot.
