Doctor Who Peter Capaldi Gives The Doctor a Dark Side

Doctor Who

New Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi looks like he will give The Doctor a dark side from the looks of the new trailers. The first trailer shown over the weekend; getting fans ready for the first episode in August 2014. Some of the other points that people could not miss are that Jenna Louise Coleman is reprising her role as The Doctor’s assistant, and a dinosaur will attack the United Kingdom.

Having a dark Doctor Who will be interesting. Over recent years, fans have gotten used to the energetic and humorous Doctors, played by David Tennant and then Matt Smith. Some expected Capaldi to play a darker Doctor, considering the look of his costume and his first ever episode at the Christmas special.

This is not the first time that fans will have seen a dark Doctor, even those who only started to tune in when the show rebooted in 2005. For the first season of the reboot, Christopher Eccleston decided to play the role with a darker twist. He was dressed all in black, with a leather jacket, and kept his northern accent; after all, “all planets have a north.” The darker twist to the character was there due to all the ups and downs the character had had during his life and various regenerations.

David Tennant also gave The Doctor an edgier style for a short period just after he said goodbye to assistant Rose, played by Billie Piper, forever. He was about ready to give up until Donna, played by Catherine Tate, came along. Now Peter Capaldi has come into Doctor Who and is giving The Doctor a dark side.

The first trailer was shown during the break between the two halves of the World Cup final. Before this, only the odd teaser has been shown, leaving fans wanting more. This new trailer has fans of the show on the edge of their seats, and they now look forward to the show starting in just over a month’s time.

The BBC had informed fans that the trailer for the show would air during half-time of the game. It led to many people choosing to watch the game on the BBC rather than ITV just for the trailer. Some even tweeted about the trailer being the highlight of the whole night, especially considering the lack of scoring from either team during the first half.

As well as giving The Doctor a darker side, Capaldi makes it clear that his trip through his memories and almost ending his life has made him want to change. One of the most poignant lines in the trailer is how he has lived for 2,000 years and made many mistakes. He tells Coleman’s character Clara that he needs to rectify his mistakes.

Each time a new actor plays the iconic role, he brings his own style. Capaldi has made it clear from this trailer that he will not continue with the style from his predecessors. Capaldi’s Doctor will have a darker side, and fans cannot wait for Doctor Who to air on August 23.
