‘Jimi: All Is by My Side’ in Theaters September 26th [Video]

Jimi All is by My Side

The highly anticipated Jimi Hendrix movie, All is by My Side, will be coming to US theaters on Sept. 26, 2014. News of the film has excited crowds when it announced that Andre 3000 of the rap group Outkast would be starting as the psychedelic rock icon. The film first debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013, and later made an appearance at South by Southwest. Although the film will not feature any songs written by Jimi Hendrix, fans of the rock star are can still see the artist’s rise to fame in this new biopic.

Jimi: All is by My Side was written and directed by John Ridley. The American writer rose to fame after the success of his 2013 film, 12 Years a Slave, earned over $187 million and won a series of awards including three Academy Awards (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay), the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts recognition for Best Film and Best Actor. After successfully getting everyone’s attentions, John Ridley is gracing audiences with another film created from his dark and honest mind.

True, Jimi Hendrix suffered many hardships, but critics (and even those portrayed that remain living) have argued that some events were ultimately over-dramatized in the film. Kathy Etchingham, who is played by Haley Atwell in the film, stated that she was uneasy with the scene where Hendrix was depicted beating her, and claims that such events never happen. News of Hendrix’s temper and violent outbreaks have been widely reported in the media, stemming from his alcohol and barbiturate abuse. On top of that, the film faced another major setback when Hendrix’s estate refused to allow the studio to use any of Hendrix’s songs in Jimi: All is by My Side, therefore limiting the timeline to the early stages of the musicians career, before he blew up.

Jimi: All is by My Side takes place in the heart of London’s Swinger scene in 1966 and 1967, before Hendrix released his Debut album Are You Experienced. The movie sets the tone for the young artist when he first came to the UK in the middle of the Love Era with only a guitar, and not a cent to his name. It shows how his relationship with Etchingham helped inspire him as he built a career. The film also delves into the beginning of his drug addiction, which eventually lead to his untimely demise at the age of 27 in 1970.

Although Jimi Hendrix was only actively producing music for seven years, he quickly became a pioneer of the psychedelic rock music movement, and has since become a legend in his own time. His name and art is well-known throughout the world, and his music continues to be played on various mediums to this day. More than 40 years after his death the world can get a glimpse at his start in Jimi: All is by My Side on Sept. 26, 2014, in US theaters. The film will be in UK theaters even sooner on Aug. 8, 2014.
