Iggy Azalea, the Pop Star?

Many upcoming musical artists try a hodgepodge of things to get noticed and apparently, rapper Iggy Azalea is no different. She is currently seen as one of the hottest female artists in hip-hop, but a recently uncovered music video shows what things could have been like if she went on more of a pop path. The clip is of a track called Nothing Like Me and just as it is titled, the song is nothing like what the world now knows of the Australian starlet.

The clip was uploaded to YouTube on August 11 by a user named “P.O.P.” According to the description, the song was recorded in the hopes that it would lead Azalea to stardom.

“This… isn’t a new song,” the unknown provider states. “[It] is [an] older song with a label record that Iggy was almost [signed to]”.

The track showcases a singing Azalea, something she has never done on her current music, over a pulsing pop beat. Commenters have pointed out that it has a similar feel to the song Womanizer by Britney Spears. Others have tried to question the authenticity of the song, saying that it sounds nothing like Azalea.

It is part of the long road to popularity for the now 24-year-old. She was previously signed to Interscope Records before being dropped and eventually made her way onto Grand Hustle Records, which is owned by her mentor, rapper T.I. She is currently signed to the legendary hip-hop collective, Def Jam.

Nothing Like Me does not help the constantly argued credibility of the woman born Amethyst Kelly. Since breaking big in 2012, rap fans and critics alike have thrown out concern about her abilities to break ground as a solid hip-hop artist. In an interview with Billboard magazine back in June of 2014, she questioned why she was constantly questioned on her authenticity.

“We get so caught up, especially in rap, with what’s authentic,” she explained, adding that she assumed people expected her “to write a song about living in the outback and riding a kangaroo to be authentic.”

Her heaviest competition, fellow female rapper Nicki Minaj, added fuel to the flame that same month at the BET Awards. During an acceptance speech, Minaj was said to have been attacking Azalea when she toyed with a repeated notion that T.I. was a “ghost writer” behind much of Azalea’s debut album, The New Classic. T.I. himself would attempt to defend his artist to a Detroit-based radio station.

“I couldn’t put her thoughts into words as articulate as she does,” he said. “She just has a different way of presenting herself and her art.” Minaj has since clarified her initial thoughts.

Whether or not this will help or harm Iggy Azalea’s strength in hip-hop is anyone’s guess. In an interesting aside, Nicki Minaj has had her status as a strong hip-hop artist questioned just as much as Azalea has. Songs such as Starships and Pound the Alarm are two of Minaj’s biggest hits to date — however, they were big for pop radio. Azalea has yet to comment on the leak.
