Miley Cyrus Done With Twerking? [Video]

Miley Cyrus is done with twerking, at least for now. The 21-year-old Wrecking Ball hit-maker gave a statement at the 2014 MTV VMA pre-show that suggested she is planning on taking a break from the dance move she has become famous for over the past year.

Cyrus made the comment while talking to MTV’s Sway Calloway and the star of Pretty Little Liars, Lucy Hale. When asked how she felt about the fact that fellow performer Nicki Minaj recently broke the record that Wrecking Ball set for most views in 24 hours, she gave the statement that she was ready to hand over the twerking title to the Super Bass singer, going on to say that she did not have the same assets as Minaj, a fact she says she is more than okay with. Cyrus was full of nothing but praise for Minaj’s music video, complimenting the R&B artist on all her hard work. She followed this up by saying she was retiring from twerking, and that she was ready to focus on the music.

The Tennessee native gave a few details concerning her recent work in the studio, confirming reports that she was in the midst of a collaboration with The Flaming Lips. She describes her upcoming music as different from what her fans have been hearing lately, referring to it as slightly psychedelic. When asked to provide a relative time frame for the release of said music, Cyrus responded that she was focusing more on making the music and not rushing it, rather than pinning a definite date on it. She gushed over her passion for being in the studio, going on to speculate on the possibility of the album taking five years to come out.

The singer proved true to her decision to reinvent herself later that evening, by way of her acceptance speech for winning the award of Video of the Year for the aforementioned song Wrecking Ball. Instead of receiving the award herself, Cyrus instead sent a homeless man in her place. The man, identifying himself only as Jesse, told the audience that he was accepting the award on behalf of the over one and a half million homeless and runaways that reside in the United States. He made reference to the enormous amount of revenue that the music industry will generate this year, and encouraged people to consider how many citizens are suffering on the streets and are scared for their survival, a battle he himself was suffering. He directed those who were interested in supporting the cause to Cyrus’ Facebook page, on which they could find additional information on how to help out. The singer herself was extremely overwhelmed with emotion during the man’s speech, weeping quietly in the audience.

Cyrus’ new-found demureness is coming as quite a shock to many, as she has made a name for herself over the past year for pushing boundaries and constantly increasing the shock value of her performances. Just last year, she raised millions of eyebrows at the very same event, getting extremely close to an at the time happily married Robin Thicke as well as a giant foam finger. Since then, her live show antics have ranged between riding on a giant hot dog to sliding down a giant tongue shaped slide. Indeed, her shows have become so raunchy over the past year that she was recently banned in the Dominican Republic, due to the government being concerned that many of her performance choices go against their view of basic morality.

It remains to be seen whether or not Miley Cyrus has officially given up twerking for good. However, the philanthropic singer appears to be set on her decision for the time being.
