American Horror Story: ‘Do Not Call Them Freaks!’

American Horror Story

During the premiere of American Horror Story: Freak Show on Wednesday, October 8 on FX, the talented cast of regulars from the past three seasons were joined by people like the world’s smallest woman, 20-year-old Jyoti Amge and the world’s tallest female model, according the the Guinness World Records book, the 6’8″ tall Erika Ervin. These two women and other people of special abilities in the cast like “Legless Suzi” (Rose Siggins, a legless mother of two), wound up in a freak show, but they do not like to be called “freaks,” as Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters) tells a policeman very pointedly.

Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of American Horror Story, directed the premiere episode, “Monsters Among Us.” It was the first time he has directed an episode since the original pilot of season one. He is very proud of the talented cast he assembled for this season, as well he should be. He went to great lengths to get many of the actors and actresses to appear, such as spending a half a year arranging for the visa to get Jyoti Amge to come to America, along with her entourage. In India, she is considered to be deity and Murphy calls her “the world’s biggest diva.”

Jyoti, 20, weighs in at just 11 pounds and she is 23 inches tall. She is also in the Guinness World Records book. Jyoti, who was born in Nagpur, India, has stated that she would like to become an actress, and with American Horror Story: Freak Show, she has accomplished this goal. The name of her character is “Ma Petit,” and according to Ryan Murphy in an interview with E! Online, she has rapidly become Jessica Lange’s favorite actress to work with. Ma Petit is a friend and assistant to Elsa Mars, Lange’s character, as well as being a member of her “freak show.” In the Guinness World Records book, Amge’s small stature is referred to as being a type of dwarfism called “achondroplasia.”

In the same interview, Murphy mentioned that Rose Siggins, who plays “Legless Suzi,” is the mother of two. He added that she is the only person known to have her condition who has carried a baby to term successfully. Rose was also in the interview, briefly, saying that one of the reasons she agreed to be on American Horror Story: Freak Show was that she heard that the actress, Kathy Bates, would be on it.

Jyoti Amge, Erika Ervin and Rose Siggins are just a few of the people who are in the cast of American Horror Story: Freak Show who are a bit “different” from most average people. Kathy Bates, as the “bearded lady,” brings a certain style and grace to the show, and the acting job of Sarah Paulson as twins Bette and Dot Tattler is simply amazing.

American Horror Story: Freak Show is twisted and scary at times, but it is also a season the celebrates what is “different” in each of us, what makes us unique. The premiere episode, on Wednesday, October 8, “Monsters Among Us,” drives this point home with the very title. The so-called “freaks” in this season’s American Horror Story might be different and some are murderers, even, like Jimmy Darling; but, “monsters” and “freaks” are relative terms. Next week’s episode, “Massacres and Matinees,” is going to be a great one, if it will be even as remotely good as “Monsters Among Us.” Be sure to tune in and watch it on FX!
