On Thursday, Jimmy Fallon’s guests on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon were actor Steve Carell, who talked about his latest movie Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, and played Word Sneak with Fallon, and professional dancer and judge on Dancing With the Stars, Jullianne Hough. The musical guest was the fantastic Philip Selway along with the Dap-Kings.
Jimmy Fallon opened the Tonight Show by welcoming his audience and talking about people and events in the news today in his monologue. “Big story out of Washington. The budget deficit has shrunk to its lowest level since President Obama took office. He gave a speech in California promoting new technology. Ironically, nobody was paying attention, as they were all looking at the screens of their new cellphones.”
jimmy Fallon then made some jokes about both the Republicans and Democrats trying to get the vote out. Then, he also made some jokes about Vice President Biden. He showed a photo of Biden eating an ice cream cone, and he said that Biden was thinking “I should have gotten sprinkles on this.”
“One way we are beating the Chinese,” Fallon said, “is having more late night talk shows with ‘Jimmy’ in the title.”
“Last week the Nude Olympics were held. In the Relay race, one of the guys said ‘Whoa! That’s not the baton!'”
Jimmy Fallon said “If Michael Caine doesn’t read a script he likes by December, he has announced he will retire.” Then, he showed a montage of scenes from The Walking Dead, having the characters look as if they were singing the theme song to Welcome Back, Kotter.
Tomorrow night, Jada Pinkett-Smith will be on the Tonight Show. Fallon invited some young women up onto the stage to demonstrate a new dance, the “Smutty Dance.” Then, he announced tonight’s guests, Steve Carell, Julianne Hough and his musical guest, Philip Selway.
It was then time for the weekly Hashtag comedy segment. The subject that people tweeted about was #ThatWasStupid. “Within 20 minutes, it was a world-wide trending topic,” Fallon said.
Some of the tweets of people were:
“When I was 5, I tried jumping into a picture because I saw Steve from ‘Blue’s Clues’ doing it.”
“I once accidentally said ‘I love you’ at the end of a conference call.”
“One time someone said they had the same name as me, and I asked what that was.”
“My mom once tried to use the flashlight on her phone to look for her phone.”
“A waiter asked my sister if she wanted ‘Soup or salad,’ and she thought he was saying ‘super salad,’ and said ‘yes.'”
“At our wedding reception, I introduced my husband as ‘My first husband.'”
“We’ll be right back with Steve Carell!” Jimmy Fallon said. Then, the Tonight Show went to a commercial break.
Jimmy Fallon introduced Steve Carell and thanked him for being on the show. “Are you getting ready for Halloween?”
“Yes!” Steve said. “I love it!”
“Are you going to wear a costume?”
“No, but one year I was in Hair and wore a nude-colored costume,” Carell said. He told Fallon he got an animatronic dog that growls and jumps out at people. This year, he got an animatronic cat to go on the other side of the driveway.
Steve said that the last concert he went to was a Weird Al one, in which the people who did the voices on The Simpsons were there. Steve told Fallon he introduced his daughter to Lorde.
“The Lord?” Fallon asked him.
“Yes — as a matter of fact, I have something for you to read,” he said, pretending to reach into his suit coat.
Jimmy Fallon said that he really loved watching Steve Carell’s latest movie, out this Friday, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Fallon said he laughed all the way through it. “There are so many clever, fun parts to it,” he told Carell.
Jimmy Fallon mentioned a scene in a restaurant in which Steve Carell caught shrimp in his mouth that someone threw at him. Fallon had a bowl of grapes and tried trowing some and Carell also caught them! Then, Jimmy showed a clip from the movie of that very scene and Steve Carell catching himself on fire accidentally.
When the Tonight Show came back from another commercial break, He said “Foxcatcher comes out in November, with Channing Tatum. We’ve had a fun time so far — let’s spice it up a little bit with Word Sneak. Our gaoal is to work these five words on the cards into our normal conversation.”
“Moose” was the first word and Steve Carell told Fallon he and his family went ‘moose watching,’ but did not see any moose. Then, Carell mentioned he could not find any zucchinis as he had on the wrong kind of “pantaloons.”
Steve talked about the salamanders he had, saying that “Anderson Cooper was the ‘very white’ one.” He was getting Fallon to crack up, trying to use words like “fluffernutter” and “kumquat” in the conversation.
After yet another commercial break, Jimmy Fallon introduced his second guest of the evening, the lovely Julianne Hough of the hit ABC series, Dancing With the Stars, where she is one of the judges this season.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Julianne Hough!” Julianne Hough did a little bit of “the Smutty Dance,” before she sat down. She told Fallon that her dad did “the Chicken Dance.”
Jimmy Fallon said “I have to be in the mood to dance.”
Julianne said her move was “when in doubt, stick it out,” and she danced a little bit as the Roots played some music.
“Is Len always grumpy and grouchy?” Fallon asked Hough.
“That’s his role, but no, it’s really kind of fun! Bruno’s always hitting on the security guard…” Hough answered him.
“You can’t tell me a front-runner, can you?”
“No; I’d get in trouble! But, Alphonso is really good,” Julianne said.
When The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon came back from another break, Fallon introduced the musical guest, Philip Selway, who he said earlier in the episode was one of the founding members of the group Radiohead. Selway performed It Will End in Tears. He played the piano as he sang. It was a really cool song. The Dap-Kings were there, playing their instruments as Selway sang, as well. They were pretty excellent — the audience erupted in applause as the song ended.
