Accomplished Broadway veteran and voiceover actress Lea Salonga has gone viral for her latest rendition of Alan Menken’s “A Whole New World” from Disney’s Aladdin in which she voiced Princess Jasmine. Salonga performed the song with renown pop/opera group Il Divo who the actress is currently on a world tour with.
Salonga’s performance of the famous Disney duet remarkably sounds just as fine-tuned and “crystal clear” as it was over 22 years ago when Aladdin was originally released in 1992. The video of said performance was reportedly filmed and uploaded to YouTube this past April, but has gained viral attention as of late due to the singer’s rise in media attention for beginning her tour with Il Divo.
Audiences will be pleased to know that Salonga voices not one, but two Disney princesses. The musical star also lends her vocals to another famous tune, “Reflection” from Mulan. That is correct, Lea Salonga is also the singing voice of Mulan. The actress serves as the singing voice of her most famous characters at any opportunity that presents themselves to her. Her singing can also be heard as Jasmine in various Aladdin themed video games and Disney Princess collaboration videos. Salonga as Mulan can also be heard in Mulan II and the popular children’s TV show Sophia the First.
Comments on the upkeep of the actress’s physical appearance in the recent “Whole New World” video have been made as well. Those that strictly know the 43-year-old singer only for her voice in the animated films will not know of her immense success in the world of theatre. The actress is known for her most memorable performances as Kim in Miss Saigon on both the Broadway and London stage in addition to her numerous acts in Cameron Mackintosh’s Les Misérables.
The Filipina actress won numerous awards for her role in Miss Saigon including the Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle. Salonga also made theatrical history by becoming the first Asian actress to play Éponine in Les Misérables on Broadway and many years later, the same accomplishment for the role of Fantine. The singer reprised her role as Éponine in the 10th Anniversary Concert performance of Les Misérables and again as Fantine in the 25th Anniversary Concert.
Carrying on with her concert reprises, Salonga will be featured in the 25th Anniversary Gala of Miss Saigon, which will air on BBC2 in the UK on October 3. The official live performance of the show took place in September at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End. Salonga portrayed her award-winning role of Kim once again as she was joined by fellow award-winning on-stage partner Jonathan Pryce who played opposite of her.
One will always remember Lea Salonga as the voice of Jasmine from Aladdin, but through all the viral madness, it must not be forgotten the immense impact the actress has had on the entertainment business. Her voice remains within the world’s childhood memories as well as many adult memories who follow the artful beauty of masterpieces such as Les Misérables or Miss Saigon. One must hope this singer may continue to bring the world joy through her radiant talent. The original video of Salonga and Il Divo’s performance of A Whole New World can be viewed below.
