Robert Downey Jr. Says ‘Yes’ to Iron Man 4

Robert Downey Jr., the armoured Avenger himself, was asked on Ellen Degeneres’ show whether an Iron Man 4 movie was in the works, to which he answered, “Yes.” The Iron Man trilogy has been a supremely successful franchise, aiding Marvel’s phase one and early phase two storylines.

Iron Man actor Downey’s “Yes” was instigated by Degeneres asking the question, “Will there be an Iron Man 4?” and then cutting the actor off as he tried to dance around the question, offering a beat-around-the-bush answer. Degeneres asked Downey, “So, yes?” to which he responded with a quick eye roll and an obligatory “Okay, yes.”

Just last month, Downey stated in an interview that at the time in question, there was no Iron Man 4 in the works. A fourth installment of Tony Stark’s solo saga may not even be in the works as of right now, as just last week, our favorite “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” was rumored to possibly be holding out from returning after next year’s Avengers 2: Age of Ultron unless Mel Gibson was named director. On Ellen, when Downey confirmed a new Iron Man movie, he never stated that he would be the star of the movie or that the movie would even be a follow up of the new Avengers movie. While it is easy to think that Robert Downey implied a return of himself as “Tony Stark,” there has been rumors that a possible new installment in the Iron Man series could feature Don Cheadle reprising his role as “Colonel James Rhodes,” and the movie being centered around Iron Man’s sidekick, “War Machine.”

Marvel’s phase two is well underway, as fans this year were able to see Captain America 2, a follow-up of Marvel’s The Avengers, where “S.H.I.E.L.D.” had become corrupted by “Hydra,” the menacing organization that opposed Cap in the first movie. Comic and superhero fans also got to see Guardians of the Galaxy as part of phase two a cosmic tale of intergalactic misfits teaming together to stop the wipe-out of an alien race. Both of these movies saw an amazing amount of success, and together they  made fans more excited than ever to see the next movies scheduled to be released as part of the “Marvel Cinematic Universe.” The next two phase two Marvel movies made public so far are Avengers: Age of Ultron in May 2015, and then AntMan later in the year of 2015.

Downey’s character, “Tony Stark,” will be saving the world one more time in the new Iron Man 4 movie rumored to be released in 2016. Whether Downey will be the main character in the movie or not may continue to be a hot topic, as Hollywood’s highest paid actor is currently under contract through the next Avengers movie. As of now, there is no confirmation about how much longer Downey will want to continue with the role, or about how much longer Marvel will want to pay the money in takes to keep Downey in the role. Actors have stepped up letting the world know that they would welcome a chance to play Iron Man, none more notable than Mark Wahberg. Fans are used to seeing Downey play Tony Stark, and may not be ready for a change.
