American Music Awards

The American Music Awards 2014 (ABC, 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. ET) was held at the Nokia Theatre in beautiful Los Angeles on Sunday. The awards show was hosted by the amazing Pitbull for the second year in a row. There were many worthy acts and musical artists who were nominated, but only a few winners. Want to see who the winners were, as chosen by the votes of fans across America? If so, continue reading, because here is the place where the winners are revealed!

Iggy Azalea was nominated for the most American Music Awards, six, but she had a lot of competition from the other musical artists who were nominated. Up for five awards were John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell, while Lorde was nominated for four American Music Awards.

The five acts/performers who were nominated in three different categories for American Music Awards were Beyonce, One Direction, Eminem, OneRepublic and Imagine Dragons. The four acts/performers nominated for two awards were Luke Bryan, Drake, Bastille and Sam Smith.

Taylor Swift was the first musical artist to take the stage during the American Music Awards on Sunday. She debuted her song Blank Space and she also took home the first Dick Clark Award for Excellence award ever presented, for having had, with 1989, three albums in succession that have sold over 1 million units.

Blank Space is the new number one song in America, according to host Pitbull. Taylor began the song by sitting at an elegant table, then killing the guy who was sitting at the other end of it. She was dressed in a flowing, gold-colored gown. There were a lot of cool special effects, like fire in the background and smoke all over the place. Swift did a fantastic job, and it was a great way to open up the American Music awards show. The audience gave her a standing ovation.

Then, Pitbull, dressed in a tuxedo, headed to the stage, shaking hands along the way. He welcomed everyone to the show and said “In the four minutes she was on stage, she sold another 68 million albums.”

Pitbull said “Remember, America, not all Hispanics are Mexican. President Obama said we all can stay.” He is from Cuba, originally.

Pitbull said he had to watch all of the videos in preparation for the show. “I watched Jennifer Lopez and Iggy’s Booty video “a hundred times.” Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy presented the first award, for the American Music Awards Favorite Band, Duo or Group – Pop/Rock award. The winner was One Direction, who just so happens to be the group chosen in a preview written on Saturday by this reporter.

After a commercial break, Ansel Elgort (The Fault in our Stars) introduced Charli XCX, who sang Boom Clap. She was wearing a white gown and sunglasses with red frames. She had some people in the audience dancing. Then, she removed her white gown and was dressed in black. The audience clapped along as she sang Break the Rules.

Next to perform on the American Music Awards was Magic (featuring Wyclef Jean). Wyclef began the song Rude by playing his guitar while he sang. The audience really got into the song, clapping along and cheering at various points during it. Rude has a cool Reggae vibe to it. Several people in the audience stood and danced to the music. They went out into the audience and greeted people as they sang.

More commercials ensued, and when the American Music Awards returned, Pitbull said “These days, with social media, you can’t tell who you’re talking to, with all of the filters people use.” He said “Here is me, and here is how I look with a filter,” showing a photo of a person with hair.

Jamie Foxx then gave the American Music Awards Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop award. It went to Iggy Azalea, and was her first win of the evening. “This award is the first award I’ve ever won in my entire life,” Iggy said. She said that it meant a lot to her.

The next performers, singing What I Like About You, by the Kinks, was 5 Seconds of Summer. They ROCKED THE SONG OUT! It is a great classic rock song, which deserves a new life, and 5 Seconds of Summer did it justice tonight.

Imagine Dragons debuted a new song, I Bet My Life, after another commercial break, and Taylor Swift accepted the Dick Clark award. Imagine Dragons were terrific — this song is AWESOME, and many people in the audience stood and clapped as they performed it. The chorus was thunderous, and the performance might well be the best one so far of the evening. Laser beams were incorporated int the performance.

The American Music Awards Favorite Male Pop or Rock Artist award went to Sam Smith. It was his first-ever win of an American Music Award. He thanked his fan base, saying that “you guys are amazing.” The person yesterday’s column predicted would win was Pharrell Williams, which did not prove to be a correct prediction.

Sam Smith then sang a song off of his latest album, featuring A$AP Rocky, called I’m Not the Only One. He gave a great performance of the song, showing why he was voted by fans across America the winner of this award.

Some of the other musical artists who performed at the American Music Awards were Selena Gomez, One Direction, Mary J. Blige, Garth Brooks, Ariana Grande, Lil Wayne, Lorde, Nicki Minaj, and Fergie, who sang her first new song in a few years, called L.A. Love. Also, Jennifer Lopez and Iggy teamed up to sing their hit song, Booty.

One Direction also won the American Music Awards Artist of the Year Award. Yesterday’s article had the win going to Iggy Azalea, based on her fan base, though One Direction was also mentioned as a possible winner in this category.

The American Music Awards Kohl’s New artist of the Year award had five musical artists nominated for it. The preview article written yesterday chose Iggy Azalea as the winner, but this proved to be an incorrect prediction, as the winner was 5 Seconds of Summer, who was considered to be a possible winner. They must have been able to muster their fan base to get out the vote for them and beat out Iggy and the others nominated for this award, like Meghan Trainor.

In the category of Favorite Female Pop or Rock Artist, the American Music Awards had three great performers who were nominated. Katy Perry was the winner, though Saturday’s article mistakenly predicted, once again, that Iggy Azalea would be the winner. Katy Perry was mentioned as a likely winner if Iggy had not been chosen, though.

The only other category that the preview mentioned was that of the American Music Awards Single of the Year award. The article predicted that Iggy Azalea’s song, Fancy, would be the winner. Instead, however, the winner of this award was Dark Horse by Katy Perry (featuring Juicy J).

Other winners of the American Music Awards included the one for Favorite Pop or Rock Album. there were three albums nominated, with the winner being One Direction’s terrific album, Midnight Memories. Katy Perry’s Prism and Lorde’s Pure Heroine were the other two nominated.

The American Music Awards 2014 Favorite Male Country Artist award had three people nominated for it. They were Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton. The winner of this award was Luke Bryan. Carrie Underwood beat out her competitors, Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves, to win the Favorite Female Country Artist of 2014 award.

The American Music Awards Favorite Country Duo or Group award had three acts/performers nominated. They were the Eli Young Band, Lady Antebellum and Florida Georgia Line. Voters across America chose Florida Georgia Line as the winner of this award.

The award for Favorite Country Album of 2014 on the American Music Awards show went to Brantley Gilbert’s album, Just as I Am, though the other two albums nominated were aslo deserving of the award. They were the latest Garth Brooks album, Blame It All on My Roots: Five Decades of Influences and Eric Church’s album, The Outsiders.

Beyoncé won two American Music Awards, one for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist and the other for Favorite Soul/R&B Album for her fantastic album, Beyoncé. The Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist American Music Awards honor went to John Legend.

Two of the other American Music Awards were for Favorite Alternate Artist, which was won by Imagine Dragons; and, Top Soundtrack, which the soundtrack to Frozen won, hands down.

The American Music Awards 2104 show, hosted by Pitbull, had some awesome performances in it by today’s hottest musical artists. Pitbull did another great job hosting the show, and unlike many other awards shows, the winners were chosen entirely by the voters of America.
