Dumb and Dumber To: Jennifer Lawrence and That Cameo

Way back in September 2013, Jennifer Lawrence was in fan girl heaven about the fact that she had done a cameo in Dumb and Dumber To. According to The Hunger Games star she spent an entire day shooting her scene and she was very excited about working with Carrey and Daniels. Talking to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show last year Jennifer revealed that she was a huge fan of Dumb and Dumber who was able to quote all the dialogue from the original 1994 film.

The cameo came about because of the logistical proximity of the Farrelly Bros film to the set of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1. Lawrence was on location working as Katniss Everdeen in the third segment of the Hunger Games franchise. As the Jim Carrey/Jeff Daniels film was being shot in Atlanta, Georgia, the American Hustle star stopped by for a visit which turned into an all day cameo filming experience.

Jennifer admitted to Fallon, on The Tonight Show that she was not just a fan of the original 1994 film but of two more comedies which held a fond place in her heart and which she had all the dialogue memorized. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) starring Will Ferrell and Steve Carell and Step Brothers (2008), also starring Will Ferrell. She proved on to Fallon last year that she could quote lines from any of the films “on demand.”

So Lawrence stopped by the film set of Dumb and Dumber To and spent an entire day, which in “film-speak” could mean up to 23 hours on set, and played the role of a young Fraida (Kathleen Turner’s part in the film) with Harry and Lloyd. What was not publicised, until recently, was that this cameo was not quite as “spontaneous” as originally reported. Spontaneity generally does not allow for one to retain “cutting rights” their cameo, which is exactly what the Katniss Everdeen actress worked out with the Farrelly Bros.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Jennifer took a look at the finished cameo and vetoed it ever appearing on screen. The two brothers have both downplayed this bit of information but anyone who has seen the film and waited patiently to get a quick look at America’s favorite girl-next-door actress, will know that there is not the tiniest hint who that young Fraida is in the back of the van. Just as Bill Murray fans will have a hard time finding him in his cameo.

As with anything hyped beforehand, the imagination runs riot as to why the Silver Linings Playbook star insisted that her footage should end up on the cutting room floor. The award winning actress has got her third outing as Katniss Everdeen hitting cinemas next week so her decision to axe her scenes with the two stars of Dumb and Dumber To must have massively disappointed the Farrelly’s.

On the plus side Dumb and Dumber To has come in number one in terms of box office takings over the weekend so the fact that Jennifer Lawrence did not appear in the movie via cameo, as advertised did not really hurt the film. Since Jennifer had veto rights it also seems highly unlikely that the footage will find its way into the special features of the DVD when it is released. Bill Murray’s cameo, which was so short and oblique that he was unidentifiable may be a hint as to why Lawrence did not want hers to go on screen. Alas the world may never know as “Katniss Everdeen” is not talking and the Farrelly Bros are dodging. The Jim Carrey/Jeff Daniels sequel is showing in cinemas across the country, sans Jennifer Lawrence.
