Former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland mourns the passing of her mother who reportedly died after going into cardiac arrest. Doris Rowland Garrison passed just weeks after her daughter gave birth to her grandson. The singer has done a great job of keeping her personal life private but has never been shy about the blessing of having two mothers.
Doris was the birth mother of Kelendria Trene “Kelly” Rowland and although she eventually moved in with Beyoncé and her family, the Motivation singer’s mother paid visits to her daughter on a daily basis. Kelly spoke of both her mothers, Doris Rowland and Tina Knowles, publicly in a Mother’s Day message back in 2008. The songwriter penned some pretty special words to the mother who gave her life.
The singer said when speaking of her birth mom and Tina, God must have thought she was so special he gave her two mothers. To her natural mother she spoke of the times when she would listen and clap her hands as her daughter sang along to the theme song for the television series Amen. Kelly remembered how her mom would look at her like she was the sun and moon and encourage her to sing up a little louder.
Kelly said it meant so much that her mother believed in her gift. She acknowledged the rough times they experienced as a family while her mother worked to balance things when working as a live-in nanny. The singer thanked her mom for running her back and forth to Destiny’s Child rehearsals after she joined the group.
The former group member said she started spending a lot of nights at the house with the Knowles family. It was not long before nights turned into months and months into years. Kelly celebrated her mother for coming over to see her every day and cooking dinner so they could all eat as a family. She credits the reason she was able to dream so big to her mother who was a model of strength and sacrifice.
Kelly ended the special message by saying she never wanted her mother to have to want for anything in life. The Dirty Laundry singer added she could not wait to give her some grand kids. Kelly finally gave her mother a grandson on November 4, 2014 right before her untimely passing. The grieving 33-year-old issued the follow statement concerning her mother:
It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my mother, Doris Rowland Garrison. She was an incredible soul who made countless sacrifices so that I could become the woman – and now mother – I am today. We humbly appreciate all the love and support and only ask for privacy during this difficult time.
This has been a big year for Kelly who also married her best friend Tim Witherspoon in May. The couple wed in Costa Rica in a low-key romantic ceremony on a Cliff-side deck overlooking the ocean. Her mother, Destiny’s Child family and a few others witnessed the nuptials. More recently Kelly and Tim welcomed their son Titan Jewell into the family.
Throughout the artist’s 17 years in the business she has sold 60 million records with Destiny’s Child and in excess of 27 million records as a solo artist. The singer has won several awards and earned multiple nominations including Grammy Awards, Billboard Music and Soul Train Music Awards. With her many accomplishments, at the top of the list is her son.
Kelly Rowland-Witherspoon had the privilege of giving life and the misfortune of losing a very important life nearly a month a part. Condolences and expressions of sympathy have come from near and far as she prepares to finalize her mother’s remains. Doris Rowland Garrison passed in Atlanta just a few days shy of her 67th birthday.
