Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck, Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, Matt Damon, Chris Evans and John Krasinski, Jim on The Office, each took the blame for the Deflategate Scandal that quarterback Tom Brady and the New England Patriots have been embroiled in following the AFC Championship game. They are some of the people who appear in a video that Jimmy Kimmel had on his show, each claiming to be the “locker guy,” who is being blamed for deflating footballs, giving the New England Patriots an unfair advantage, presumably, in their victory that led to the Super Bowl.

How can somebody like Tom Brady, who has blue eyes and is a hero, be involved in something as shady as giving the New England Patriots an unfair advantage in the AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts? Obviously, it had to be the nefarious work of somebody else, some “locker room guy” who was just trying to do his job and provide Tom Brady with the necessary tools to win.

In the spoof video that Ben Affleck and the other Bostonian celebs took part in, playing different characters, each proclaims his reason (or reasons) for letting some of the air out of the footballs that Tom Brady used. In the video, Ben Affleck says that his name is Brian Flanagan. Each of the celebs, being the loyal Patriots fans that they are, has claimed to be the so-called “locker room guy,” and have absolved Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick of any guilt in the matter.

The reasons given vary, but each one is quite inventive, and somewhat unusual. One of the reasons was to let a trapped genie out of the balls. Another was to get the necessary air to rescue a falling blimp. While rescuing a blimp is a heroic thing to do, and — Tom Brady being the hero that he is — something that Brady would have done if he had known about it, Brady was not, according to the celebs, the person behind the Deflategate Scandal of two weeks ago. Eleven out of 12 of the balls reportedly weighed two pounds less than they should have weighed.

Under-inflated balls presumably are easier for quarterbacks to grips and for receivers to catch. Also, they supposedly lead to less fumbling from running backs. With so many good aspects about playing with slightly deflated balls, it is a wonder why more football teams do not play with them. There is the pesky fact that playing with balls that are not properly inflated is against NFL rules standing in the way of such a thing happening more widely. Is the time ripe for starting a petition to change that rule?

When the New England Patriots play the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl on Sunday, all of the balls being played with will, no doubt, be properly inflated. If the Patriots win, the amount of air in the balls likely will not be a factor in their victory, and it probably was not really much of a factor in their win against the Colts. As some people have said, the Patriots would have probably won even if they had been playing with anvils.

The video of Ben Affleck, John Krasinski, Matt Damon, Steven Tyler and the others taking blame for the Deflategate Scandal and claiming to be the “locker room guy” who took the footballs into a bathroom for 90 seconds and deflated 11 of the 12 balls has gone mega-viral and has been viewed over 3 million times. According to the character Ben Affleck was playing in the video, which can be seen below, Tom Brady is “the greatest man in all of humanity.” Who is more believable, Ben Affleck, John Krasinski, the other celebs in the video, and other people on Twitter who are claiming to be the “locker room guy,” who deflated the balls, or Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick?
