Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel Have Officially Divorced

Actor Taye Diggs and Singer Idina Menzel have officially divorced. After 10 years of marriage the couple parted ways about a year ago. They met in 1996 on the original Broadway production of Rent. Diggs filed for divorce in November 2014 and by December of the same year their divorce was official. Both share the primary concern of raising their five-year-old son.

Fans of the couple were upset upon learning their Broadway lovers were calling it quits. Diggs said he was not surprised by the reaction of the public. There were days when he acknowledged the public would not be happy if the two of them split. Within the theater community there were not a lot of couples like them, according to Diggs. It was easy for people to push for them to stay together because they were a mixed race union and there are not a lot of performers as talented as Menzel.

Earlier this year Menzel told People she and Diggs go through tough times just like any other couple. She said they love each other, but refused to glorify or glamorize their union. Instead the singer said they worked hard at their marriage by finding new ways of communicating and by planning not to be separate from each other for more than two weeks at any given time. Diggs said the best thing about being married was having his best friend always by his side and knowing she had his back.

The couple married in 2003 and welcomed their son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, in 2009. Menzel, who recently took film audiences by storm in Disney’s Frozen as the voice of Elsa, said they are focused on parenting their son in this new stage of life. The two are trying to navigate raising their son while living on different coasts. Diggs said:

The best is seeing the expression on his face when I pick him up from school. The way he says ‘Daddy,’ is unrivaled by anything.

Menzel and Diggs understand the stability their son will gain by amicably co-parenting. This may not always be an easy job but it is the best way to ensure Walker’s needs are met. Their marriage has ended but their relationship has not. It has just shifted to a completely new one; a union that centers on the well-being of their child. Putting the child’s needs ahead of emotions or unresolved issues is the first step to being a responsible and mature co-parent. It is important to maintain consistent, peaceful and purposeful communication with each other during the transition.

The Broadway couple has officially divorced after being married 10 years. Diggs has already moved on to a new relationship. He and his model girlfriend, Amanza Smith Brown, made an appearance as a couple at the BET Awards last June. When questioned about her dating life, Menzel said she is open to the idea but does not have a lot of time for it.  According to a source close to the couple, their break-up has been fairly agreeable. They are both committed to raising their five-year-old son Walker peacefully together.
