Like with any book adaptation, there are differences between the book and movie versions of 50 Shades of Grey. Many of them are minor, and will not distract readers from the scenes. However, there are some that had many book fans this weekend questioning where they were. It left many fans disappointed, saying that they ruined the movie completely.
One of the biggest differences was how main female character Anastasia Steele got a job. In the books, this happens in the second book, but the movie writers added it into the first one. It is with the same publishing company, with Jack Hyde. There are many reasons to do this. The first is because there was a chance that the second two books in the 50 Shades of Grey series may not have been turned into movies, so the writers wanted to add it into the first one. Another possibility is that it would allow Hyde’s story to be told in the second movie without much else taking up the limelight.
One part that some critics have found welcoming is the food aversions and issues throughout the movie. While Christian Grey insists on a healthy diet, Anastasia has a number of aversions. There is a section in the second book that critics hope is left out of the second movie, due to the poor view of women and food in the media today.
Throughout the book, Anastasia does not eat properly. It is a concern, when considering how the media pushes women to look thin. It led to a number of restaurant scenes being cut from the movie completely.
One of the biggest differences between the 50 Shades of Grey movie and book is that there are fewer sex scenes. This is possibly not a bad thing. The writers admitted that some of the scenes had to be cut out of the movie, otherwise it would have been banned from several movie theaters. It was difficult enough creating something into an R rated movie rather than it getting the X rating that it could have gained. If it had the X rating, it would not have made the profits that it did this weekend.
Liz Jones from The Daily Mail was disappointed by the movie. One point she makes is that it took 40 minutes just to get the first kiss in the 50 Shades of Grey movie. It hinted that it was going to be a slow build. However, one woman she spoke to did say that the writers would have to leave something for the second movie. If there was too much in the first, it could turn off people for the second one.
Jones was also disappointed at the lack of full-frontal nude scenes with Christian. However, Jamie Dornan had said that he did not want the full-frontal scenes when he signed up for the movie. Most would have known that they would not happen, so it should not have been as much of a shock or disappointment.
There were a number of scenes and elements to the story missing in the movie. Unfortunately, it has to happen when books are adapted. Most of the differences between the 50 Shades of Grey book and movie did not take away from the overall storyline.
