Aquaman looks a lot different since he first swam onto the pages of comic books in 1941, as revealed in the first released image of the superhero, who will be played by actor Jason Momoa. The photo was posted to Twitter by Zack Snyder, director of the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Momoa is best known for his work on the television series Stargate: Atlantis and on the HBO series Game of Thrones. He has been tapped to play Aquaman not only in the upcoming Batman v. Superman film, but also in a two-part Justice League movie and in 2018’s Aquaman.
In the photo, Momoa is clad in a gilded shoulder plate and arm cuffs, molded to resemble scales. Far from appearing resplendent or golden, the attire worn by Aquaman is gritty and looks to be almost tarnished. Holding his trident, the bearded superhero glares menacingly at the camera.
True to his prior styling of Superman in Man of Steel, Snyder’s Aquaman appears dark and brooding. Even the original Aquaman green and orange colors seem washed in black.
The newly-released image of the new Aquaman has caused a fair share of speculation regarding what is meant by “UNITE THE SEVEN,” which is written across the photo. Because it has been rumored that all members of the Justice League of America, of which Aquaman was a founder, will be shown in the director’s upcoming film, “SEVEN” could refer to them. “SEVEN” could also possibly be a reference to the legendary Seven Seas over which Aquaman reigns.
BadAss Digest’s Devin Faraci claims to have seen the script of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. According to Faraci, only Aquaman, Batman, Cyborg, Superman, The Flash and Wonder Woman appear in it, leaving the seventh member of the Justice League, Green Lantern, out. It is thought that Green Lantern will first appear in Justice League. Faraci believes that since The Flash and Aquaman only appear on screen briefly in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, it is possible that a small appearance by the seventh member, Green Lantern, could still be added into the movie.
Fans of DC Comics were given a small taste of the upcoming movie during the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, during which the first movie trailer was shown. The producers have still not released the trailer to a wider audience, and the official plot of the movie has not been revealed.
The trailer of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice shows Batman repairing the Bat Signal in a rainstorm. When the signal is fixed and the switch is turned on, the audience sees Superman, his eyes glowing red, hovering in the air.
In addition to Momoa, the film will also star Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, reprising their roles of Batman and Superman respectively. Other stars set to appear in the movie are Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Jeremy Irons (Alfred), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Jesse Eisenberg (Lex Luthor.)
Accompanying the image on the Twitter post was the message, “There is only one true King.” Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2016. A solo film starring Aquaman will follow in 2018.
