Neil Patrick Harris Hosting the Oscars

Neil Patrick Harris is hosting his first Oscars. Viewers will be in good hands with the multi-talented Harris, who will showcase his singing, dancing, and a little bit of magic. The 87th Academy Awards airs this Sunday night on ABC at 7 ET/4 PT.

The four-time Tony and two-time Emmy host desires to find more material to push the show to another level. It is a complicated, lengthy process he has been at work on since he announced his hosting gig last October. Harris mentions he is going to be a kinder host like Billy Crystal, who he grew up watching.

“I skew kinder. I want to keep it a classy show,” says Harris. “It’s a night of celebration. All of these people worked so hard all year long, all career long to attend this night. To make jokes at them, that’s just not my style.”

Last year’s show featured Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres and her massively re-tweeted selfie. Visiting DeGeneres’ daytime talk show this past Wednesday, Harris joked that he is haunted by that selfie shot that was seen around the world.

“I see that in my nightmares,” Harris said during the episode. “Your selfie shot was the most spectacular, most successful thing, and it worked out so well that it’s this horrible dark cloud over my head now. How do you beat the selfie that broke the Internet?”

This was all said in playfulness. The truth is, Harris is under immense pressure hosting the Oscars for the first time. The chances of success or failure for an Oscar telecast certainly starts with the host. A natural host, like Crystal or Carson, can think on his feet and cope with disaster. The wrong hosts become part of the disaster. Harris is definitely poised for success.

Harris is a pretty busy guy. As if the Oscars were not enough, he is popping up all over the place ahead of his big day. London Fog has released its spring ad campaign pictures ahead of his Oscars debut. This is his second campaign for London Fog. The first time, he starred alongside his husband, David Burtka, for the clothier’s holiday ads.

Harris’ busy schedule has not let it affect him. He is preparing for one of the biggest nights at the Oscars. He is calm, confident, and feels refreshed. He knows he is with some good hands under producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron in their third Oscars. Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the Oscar-winning songwriters of Frozen fame, have written an original number, Moving Pictures, for Harris.

The 2015 Oscar ceremony is being televised live in more than 225 countries. Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), and Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)  will be among the presenters. Lady Gaga and Jack Black are a couple of the performers slated to perform. Robin Roberts and Lara Spencer joined by Michael Strahan will host the Oscars Opening Ceremony: Live From The Red Carpet.

On Oscar night, Harris will do quiet contemplation to prepare before he goes onstage to host the Oscars. He wants this to be fun!
