Cyrus

As the MTV VMA’s draw closer, host Miley Cyrus took the liberty to speak on the small Twitter beef between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift after the nomination snub of Anaconda. In an interview with New York Times, the Wrecking Ball singer did not hold her tongue about the small controversy. The recently bold and boisterous pop singer made it pretty clear that she understand both sides of the argument, but did not like the way that it was all approached or handled.

For those that may have not been aware of the minimal beef between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, the drama unfolded on the eve of the announcement of MTV VMA’s “Video of the Year” and “Best Choreography” nominees in July. Among the brief list of nominees were Taylor Swift (Bad Blood), Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars (Uptown Funk), Beyonce (7/11), Ed Sheeran (Thinking Out Loud), and Kendrick Lamar (Alright). To Minaj’s dismay, her video was conveniently left off the list for competitors.

This did not sit too well with her and the flamboyant rapper took to Twitter to voice her opinion on the snub. Minaj alluded the blatant disregard and mentioned that when “other” girls break records, their videos get nominations. Minaj also stated that the videos featuring slim built woman will always get the nomination. Swift quickly jumped in to voice her opinion and did not understand Minaj’s salty demeanor. The Bad Blood singer went on to tweet that she has always been a supporter of Nicki’s and did not understand the animosity or why she would pit woman against each other. After a brief exchange of tweets between the two camps, the reported overhyped beef seemed to have been diminished to nothing.

CyrusIt seems that all was good in the female pop-music world, until Cyrus spoke her opinion about the issue. When asked about her feelings about the Twitter beef, Cyrus went on to explain that Minaj’s overall message was not delivered properly. The singer also commented that the rapper’s approach was not polite, nor selfless. Cyrus explained that her critique of the snub made it seem like it was all about her and not how the video, allegedly, supported women with a voluptuous figure.

CyrusThough the issue was not really a large beef between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, Cyrus claimed that their was a way that the rapper could have spoken to the pop singer without coming across as rude. The commenting via social media and not mentioning the racism that Minaj was trying to speak on, seemed more like a jealous rant than a righteous argument about the disregard for full-figured women of color in popular culture. Cyrus even went on to defend MTV by saying that the nominations were not intentionally set up to snub her.
Cyrus’ comments come less than a week before her debut as the host of the popular award ceremony. Considering that the minimal argument was resolved in less 24 hours over a month ago, it may seem like added publicity for the upcoming show. Only time will tell what will go down on the MTV stage this Sunday at 9 p.m. EST.
